Mangaluru: Fish transportation to Goa can resume with food certificates - Deshpande

Mangaluru, Nov 26: State revenue minister, R V Deshpande, clarified that Goa has not placed any blanket ban on import of fish from Karnataka. "I have spoken to the health minister of Goa. He informed me that they have been insisting on certificate from food department, as they found that several fish samples contained formalin. Therefore, I advise the fishermen here to obtain such a certificate before sending fish. This is in beneficial from the point of view of people's health too. No one will lose anything out of this measure. Our fishermen have agreed to obtain food safety certificates, and this will solve the problem," he added.

The revenue minister also said that steps would be taken to address certain problems that have arisen in coastal districts on the issue of land conversion, single site, and rule 94c. He noted that unlike in urban areas, issuance of Khatas in land located in rural places is facing a glitch. He said efforts are being made to resolve this issue.

The minister added that bifurcation of villages is under way and symbolic inauguration alone is pending relating to creation of Moodbidri and Kadaba taluks. He added that administrative sanctions have been given for administrative buildings there and tender processes are under way.

The minister, who was here to inaugurate newly created Moodbidri and Kadaba taluks, went back as these programmes were cancelled on account of the death of actor, M H Ambareesh, He said he will come back at a later date to inaugurate these taluks.

Minister U T Khader, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLC Harish Kumar, MLC Ivan D'Souza, former MLA J R Lobo and deputy commissioner Sasikanth Senthil, were present.

    The certificate will clearly mention that "till the time we issued this certificate no formalin was found". we are good people on the way what we are doing God also may not be aware!

    Now tycoons will have post dated certificates with them in bulk along with fish as is our system. Paisa pheko tamasha dekho. It wid be wise to pass legislation awarding 10 years imprisonment to willful criminals if govt is serious about peoples health.

    In case you don’t find the kit, here are few steps that will help you detect if the fishes are laced with formalin yourself:
    Colour: Many buyers have the notion that red gills are directly related to the freshness of the fish. This may be true but you need to know the distinction in shades as well. If the gills are reddish-maroon, the fish is fresh, while if it is maroonish-black, the fish could have begun to decay. At the same time, if the gills are bright red, the fish might definitely be laced with formalin.
    Fins: If you find the fins or tail in a decayed or shrivelled up state while the meat appears fresh, it is advisable to avoid the lot. It is quite easy to miss the fins, but your insistence could save your life.
    Eyes: If you have ever noticed, fresh fish would always have clear eyes and those that have been dead for a while would begin to have cloudy eyes. Avoid those.
    Meat: While many people assess the freshness of the fishes by its firmness, you can confirm the presence of formalin in the fishes if they are rubbery to touch. If they are soft, that means the fishes have begun to already decay.
    Smell: Another notion that is associated with seafood is the stench, which only begins when they start to decay. If you have ever bought fish from the shore, you must have noticed that these only carry a saline scent. However, the formalin-contaminated fishes might not smell at all but the hack for that is to check if these are swarmed with flies or not. The latter will confirm your doubt.

    The fish laced with 'formaldehyde' is cancer as per the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission. This is the only nation in the world has done most extensive study of chemical effects on humans.
    It has been found that formalin easily contains close to 37-40 %formaldehyde and that if one ingests even 30 ml of a solution with about 37 % formalin, he or she is at high risk of cancer and even death. Even if the formalin-laced fish is cooked, the compound continues to release carcinogenic toxins in the body, of which immediate effects include abdominal pain, vomiting, and unconsciousness.
    Kochi’s Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT) had developed rapid detection kits earlier this year that can detect formaldehyde and ammonia contents in the so-called fresh fish and prevent customers from consuming toxin-laced fish products.

    The kit comprises 25 paper strips, reagent solution, and standard chart for comparing results and is quite handy. All one needs to do is to take a paper strip and scrape it on the surface of fish, followed by putting a drop of the solution on the strip and waiting for two minutes to observe any colour change.
    If the paper turns dark blue, then it means that the fish is contaminated and hazardous for consumption. The chart in the kit has colour indications as well so that one can get the result on the spot.

    In India, the cost of chemotherapy for Cancer, which can range between Rs. 150,000 to Rs. 275,000 depending on the package.

    Can the government enact a law saying that any and all food adulteration is punishable by life imprisonment and a non-bailable offence like most of the developed countries? In India greedy merchants/vendors/food sellers are involved in all types of adulteration without any control and playing with the lives of innocent civilians.

    sir you should delayed the decision for few more days because our saffron friends from mangalure ,udipi on the way to goa. they would have enjoyed goa FENI, cold bear with chicken xacuti dishes, and played casino.
