Mangaluru: SJEC hosts eventful 'Invited Cup Inter PUC Men & Women Throwball Tournament'

Mangaluru, Nov 29: The department of Physical Education of St Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor, here organized 'SJEC Invited Cup Inter PUC Men & Women Throwball Tournament 2018' on November 27 for pre-university colleges of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

The inaugural of the tournament was on November 27 at the throwball Court of the college. Sampath Lobo, producer/actor-sandalwood and international level throwball player graced the occasion as chief guest. The programme was presided over by Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, director of SJEC. The guests of honour were Fr Rohith D’Costa, assistant director of SJEC and Dr Rio D’Souza, principal of SJEC.



Dr Rio D'Souza in his welcome address introduced the chief guest to the gathering and defined the objective of organising this tournament. In his speech, Sampath Lobo said, “Sports helps us to improve self-confidence and teaches us to receive victory and defeat equally." Talking about St Joseph Engineering College he said that SJEC gives very good support to all curricular and extracurricular activities. He also wished all the participants the very best.

In his presidential address Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza said that he is proud to say that students of SJEC have excelled in state as well as national level events and that the college is delighted to host this event at the campus.

Sports advisory committee coordinator, Rachana Crasta, assistant Physical Education director, Vaneesha Rodrigues and assistant Physical Education instructor, Jeff Sunny D’Souza were present during the inaugural. D'Souza, sports advisory committee coordinator proposed the vote of thanks. Further, the chief guest inaugurated the tournament by cutting the ribbon to release the match ball and servicing the ball.

Eight men’s teams and three women’s teams participated in the tournament. Teams were from Vani PU College, Padua PU College, Rosa Mystica PU College (2 teams), St Raymond’s PU College, Vivekananda PU College, Carmel PU College and St Agnes PU College. The matches were arranged in the parallel courts prepared in the college ground. The men’s final was played between Rosa Mystica PU College and St Raymond’s PU College. Rosa Mystica PU College emerged as winners of the tournament while St
Raymond’s PU College bagged the runners up trophy.

The women’s final was played between Padua PU College and St Agnes PU College. Padua PU College emerged as the winners of the tournament while St Agnes PU College bagged the runners up trophy. The winners of the tournament were awarded with trophy and a cash prize of Rs 6,000 and the runners up were awarded with trophy and a cash prize of Rs 4,000.

In the men's category Rakshith from St Raymond’s PU College was awarded Best Thrower, Nikhil from Rosa Mystica PU College was awarded Best Receiver and Samarth from Rosa Mystica PU College was awarded Best All Rounder. In the women's category, Pooja from St Agnes PU College was awarded Best Thrower, Jyothsna from Padua PU College was awarded as Best Receiver and Bhoomika from Padua PU College was awarded Best All Rounder.

The prizes were given away at the valedictory programme held in the evening. The tournament was appreciated by all the participants and team managers.
