Bolsonaro attends Palmeiras football match to celebrate Liga title

Sao Paulo, Dec 3 (IANS): Brazilian President-elect Jair Bolsonaro watched the football match between Palmeiras and Vitoria in the Brazilian Championship at the Allianz Parque stadium here.

Bolsonaro, a Palmeiras fan, on Sunday also presided at the party for the team's supporters after the match which ended with the award of the Liga title that the team clinched last week with its win over Vasco da Gama, reports Efe news.

The president-elect, who heads Brazil's emerging extreme right political wing, was invited by the club's board to watch the match from special box seats at the stadium from where he greeted the public wearing the team's green jersey.

Bolsonaro's father named him Jair at his birth on March 21, 1955, since that was the birthday of one of the most popular soccer stars of that time, Jair Rosa Pinto, a midfielder for the Brazilian national squad and Palmeiras, along with other teams.

Bolsonaro, who will take office on January 1, last weekend congratulated Palmeiras on the social network after their Liga title, the 10th such title for the team.
