India's growth was muted by lack of intent of earlier governments: Modi

New Delhi, Dec 7 (IANS): Claiming that India has witnessed unprecedented growth and development under his tenure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday blamed the "lack of intent" of previous governments making the nation lag behind in all aspects until the BJP came to power in 2014.

"The fundamental question to be asked is why India, even 67 years of independence, continued to be underdeveloped?

"Eminent personalities ruled the country and went away but Indians yearned for even the basic of services. For over six decades, the issues faced by the masses were never resolved, why?

"Despite skilled human resources and abundant natural resources the country was far from developed. The reason was not lack of resources but lack of intent, lack of compassion, lack of work culture," said Modi.

Modi was addressing the 75th anniversary of Hindi daily "Dainik Jagran" here, during which besides, crediting the media for playing a major role in nation building, the Prime Minister dedicated most of his over 30 minutes speech in emphasising how his government in merely four years has ushered in all-round progress and put India in world reckoning.

In an obvious reference to the Congress, which ruled the country for nearly six decades, Modi said the previous governments never intended to work for the masses for the sake of their "politics of vote-bank and appeasement".

Enumerating his government's various schemes and projects and informing how the country has seen "unprecedented progress" in all fields, Modi said: "If the previous governments had done all this work, then how would they have pursued the politics of vote-bank, their politics of appeasement".

"Can you imagine that Mizoram, Meghalaya and Tripura were not on the railways map before we came to power.

"If the intention and the work culture that exists now, if it existed earlier, one can only imagine the progress the country could have made," said Modi.

Modi praised the media's role in turning his pet schemes ‘Swachh Bharat Mission' and ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' into national movements.

"To question the system is not only the media's responsibility but also its right and I welcome it," he said praising the media for its role in strengthening the process of nation building.

There is really a substance in what the chaiwaala says . The earlier Govt were involved in scams after scams when the Harvard economist PM was mute and looked the other way. Or else just imagine, How come an ordinary bar dancer become the most wealthiest woman in the world, without holding any office? Its obvious.

When the present PM knows that they were elected for making the correction to earlier run govt mistakes as the citizens found the system faulty; there is no need for the elected members to repeat
same faults of earlier govt. Rather let them show what have they done; this completely shows their illiteracy and mishandling. Level of PM talks should intellectually be framed well to be appreciated by the public and not of low standard.

The reuslts are hardly 4 days away for the 5 states. If India had gone back 50 years, very likely none will vote. if they did vote and BJP wins, then what are you gonna say? invent alibi like EVM today itself. it may come handy to post comment here.

MangaloreOh how easily twist the mind of people!

So after 2014, you have done some work and you are praising yourself all the time. in 70 years, nothing was done! No education, no power, no Railway, No Airport, no ports, No Economy, No courts, no food, no shelter, no roads, no vehicles, no companies, no industries, no IIT/IIM, no HAL, no ISRO, No hospitals, no doctors, no jobs.. Nothing! Only after 2014 we got all these. Come on man, everything was in place before Modi became PM. Of course, every government has to do some work.. At least. But saying that 100 times and unnecessarily blaming previous govt wont help. It can be used a election weapon (Always speak from election mind) to get votes from some who believe whatever you said is right!
