Gond art by Jangarh Shyam's family on view in Delhi


New Delhi, Dec 12 (IANS): The family of tribal art legend Jangarh Singh Shyam, who is credited with bringing tradition of Gond painting into urban consciousness, is exhibiting their art here starting Wednesday.

The group show "Gond Views: From their natural world to visions of Delhi" showcasing Gond art by two Gond artists, Japani Shyam and Dilip Shyam opened at the India International Centre (IIC) here, a statement said.

On view are works by Shyam's daughter Japani, who was only 13 years old when he committed suicide in 2001. Japani had already started painting, encouraged by her father.

A recipient of the FICCI Young Woman Achiever award for 2017-2018, she has exhibited extensively in Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai.

Also on display are works by her cousin, Dilip Shyam, who was also guided by Jangarh Shyam from the age of 17 until the latter's death.

The exhibition has been organised in collaboration with folk art initiative NOOR, and is open for public viewing till December 18.
