5 killed in Afghanistan shooting


Mazar-e-Sharif (Afghanistan), Dec 14 (IANS): Four civilians and one police officer were killed and five were wounded after gunmen fired on people attending a funeral ceremony in Afghanistan's Balkh province on Friday, the police said.

"The incident occurred at midday in Dawlat Abad district, the attackers fled the scene after the firing and police personnel launched a pursuit operation against the fleeing rebels," district police chief Abdul Latif told Xinhua news agency.

Among those killed was an Afghan local police official Mohammad Akhtar.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack.
