M'lore: City Bar Association Demands Quick Completion of New Court Premises

Daiiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SN/CN)

Mangalore, Dec 12: The construction of the district court commenced three years ago, but only the basement and half of the first floor has been completed so far, said S P Changappa, president, Mangalore Bar Association, at a press conference on Friday December 12.

After the demolition of the district court, six courts have been shifted to the third floor of the city corporation office while 12 courts are functioning from the premises of the old court. Hence, it creates problems for legal practitioners and the staff to be present at both places within a short time, said Changappa.

Though chief minister Yeddyurappa promised to release funds for the completion of the court, during his visit to the city, it has not yet been sanctioned, he said.

The state government has released only Rs 2.25 crores for the project which is estimated at Rs 18 crores. The members of Mangalore Bar Association insist that the state government release the funds within 15 days for the construction of the third floor, or else strict action will be taken, added Changappa.

Eshwar N Kottari, chief secretary, said that the association members will celebrate the birth centenary of Justice K S Hegde and a special souvenir will be released on June 6, 2009.

Apart from this, a photograph of Justice Hegde will be placed in the Mangalore Bar Association Hall, on the occasion. He also said that one of the roads in the city must be named after the eminent judge.

H V Raghavendra, treasurer, Elizabeth Neliyar, vice-president, and Anita Kini, joint secretary, were present at the press conference.
