Beltangady: Sixteen Badminton Teams Compete for State-Level Larren Cup

The Larren Cup state-level floodlit badminton tournament, exclusively for invited teams, was inaugurated at the S J Pinto memorial stadium, at 7.00 pm on Friday December 12. The two-day tournament was organized for the fifth consecutive year by Ivan Pinto Friends, an organization involved in promoting sports, social service, and charity.
 
Fr James D’Souza, parish priest, Holy Redeemer, Beltangady, hoisted the flag and graced the occasion.  The inaugural ceremony was presided over by Ivan Pinto. Ten-year-old state junior chess champion and international player Shabiq Varma, was felicitated by Ivan Pinto on the same occasion.
 
Sridar Bhide, correspondent, Mundaje Shatabdi Vidhyalaya Samiti, lawyer Swarnalata A, Rajashekar Azri, former member, zilla panchayat, and S N Pinto were the guests of honour.
 
All 16 teams competing for the state-level tourney have been provided a traveling allowance, accommodation, food, and accessories by the organizers. 
 
Members of Ivan Pinto Friends are mostly natives working in the Gulf who share common interests. All of them were sportsmen in their school and college days, and are trying to promote sports among the youth in their hometowns.
