Mangalore, Dec 17: Briefing newsmen about the proceedings of the University Syndicate meeting held here on Monday December 15, University vice-chancellor Prof K M Kaveriappa informed, that the Syndicate approved the scheme of setting up of a Yakshagana research centre in the University, at a cost of five crore rupees.

The centre will conduct studies and research on Yakshagana and organize seminars on Yakshagana, he said. He also revealed that the University is contemplating on the possibility of recognizing a Yakshagana course at the graduate or post-graduate level. 

Syndicate member Dayanand Pai and others had donated one crore rupees for the purpose. The University has already written to the government, asking for granting recognition for the course, he added.  The University also is thinking of setting up of training facility at Uppinakudru near Kundapur in holding puppetry shows. Approval of the Syndicate was also obtained for plans to start credit-based semester system in post-graduate courses, he informed. Government nod is also awaited for the other proposals like starting an evening MBA college and starting of Nehru Study Centre, he revealed.

As regards opening of a post-graduate centre in Udupi, Kaveriappa said that the University will go ahead with it if the district administration is able to allocate 50 acres of land for the same. Efforts are on to ensure that Mangalore University College which is 130 years old, is recognized as a heritage building, he said.
