Udupi, Dec 24: Udupi district is known as the district of literates and intellectuals. It is ahead in development and has won several awards. It is identified at national level as clean open defecation free district. But there are several poor families living in Manchi colony, Alevoor in pitiful and pathetic conditions facing scarcity of water and electricity. A picture of poverty and helplessness can be seen here. Government officials who came here once did not come back.

The family of Bhasker with six members is living in a hut on red stone hill provided by Adivasi development department. They belong to tribal community. Bhasker couple has six children. All of them are small except a daughter. The family does not have ration card or electricity connection. Though there is gas, it cannot be used. Toilet is not seen there. Though their relatives are staying close by, they are not allowing the family to stay there even for short period. The family is too weak to level the land and construct a house.

Bhasker works on daily wages. As what he earns is not sufficient for the family, his son has stopped his education at eighth standard to work. Two children are going to school. His daughter met with a fire accident in the hut when she was one month old infant. She has studied till eighth standard and stopped studies. She says that she will continue studies only after their house is raised.

An aged woman Appi is staying alone in the colony. She has four children. One daughter is married. One son is staying separately with his family. The youngest son is not able to work as he is suffering from shoulder pain since the last seven years. Though they had come from Bantakallu to stay here six months ago, they do not have identity cards. The officials are pushing days saying that their ration card will be sent by post though they had applied it one year ago. The house constructed in 1993 is in dilapidated condition. They do not have Aadhaar card. Appi crawls due to leg pain. They sleep hungry often. Their electricity is cut off as they could not pay the bill.

There are several other families facing the plight. Concerned government department should act and provide basic necessities to them.

This story makes me to feel like a sinner for not sharing enough. Looks like Roshan from Humanity is only the solution for their situation.

All religious collect so much of money from their respective communities . I am sure it won’t affect their finances to help the poor and marginalised. All religious houses should adopt and look after the needy in their area . Pls give some back instead of spending on unnecessary rituals . I am sure this will please God more than anything else.

@Anil mangalore,we all blame sanghis, religion heads or MALs.as it said here, people came once didnt turn again. May be simply why not villagers who see their plight could help these poor souls ,I am sure they are illiterates.so even village heads must be knowing it.when poor people to help, noone coes forward.butsome sootboot men come a group fotografs come and next day newspapae rwill be full with fotos and news about helping.so best is village heads should take notice of this and take care.many may not be knowing their bad situation .kind social workers can come forward and relieve their problem by either taking to govt hospitals and give care.Sad to see them as if they are still in forest people vegitating in town.

your useless comments wont help this family. if any problem solved by blaming sanghis then I will support you. but you are simply enjoying by blaming sanghis for each & every incident. you have already decided that sanghis are wont help anyone. then why you are again expecting from them? you people can help them right.

This is because of 71 years of misrule by your favorite party, before 2014 they were not living in luxury villas, what happened to the slogan of Indira Gandhi given in 1971 of 'Garibi Hatoa' ....

If your Fayku Mama really bothered about the people of our country, he would not have gone foreign countries to start up his "TEA STALS". If he did a fruitful foreign visit he would have called for a 'PRESS CONFERENCE' to discuss his achievement of that tour. This NALIKE same like Prashant KIRI KIRI Karkera push the country backward to 1971 as you said!

was there no poverty before 2014.... open your brains... there was much more poverty before 2014 also ...how many poor people really got all facilities from govt before 2014 ... dont simply for the heck of commenting write stupid things just to bring down our prime minister.... i dont see any politician who promised big things before elections fulfilling their promises.... so stop simply blaming any on political parties... any politician, may be from bjp, congi or any other enters into politics just to mint money....

Why people voted BJP for 'Garibi Hatoa' . and for this Modi said he will give 15,00,000.00 right do you remember or forgot within no time like Modi. If you would have given 3,00,000.00 their life would have been like heaven on earth. Concentrate on this article and write your comment you understand!
