New Delhi, Dec 17: The classic story of a tall, dark and handsome hero falling for the vulnerable and comely girl, that made thousands of readers swoon may soon be set in Agra, Mumbai or other Indian cities. Global romance series leader Mills & Boon on Tuesday announced an exclusive short story writing contest to discover the ‘World’s next big romance writer’ from India to join its team of over 1,300 writers.

“We are looking for an author who can lend an Indian flavour to our stories. We have a global pool of writers from across the world in places like Cuba, Hong Kong, London and Australia, but we have not received, as yet, an overwhelming response from India,” says Andrew Go, director — India Operations, Harlequin Mills & Boon India. With the ‘Passions’ short story writing contest, the publisher of bestselling international authors such as Debbie MaComber, Nora Roberts and Penny Jordan, Mills & Boon hopes to reach out to the rich Indian literary talent and provide them with a global platform.

The publication is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. “India is traditionally very romantic with the world’s most beautiful ode to love, the Taj Mahal, located here. We want millions of our readers to be able to read a story set in this land of romance,” said Go.

The winner’s story will be published by Mills & Boon and its author will receive a year long consultation from the publisher’s editorial staff as well as a free laptop computer and diamond jewellery. The winner will be announced on February 4, 2009.

“Women across the world unite over M&B and we sell an average of 4 books every second and publish over 100 new books per month. In India, we are promoting our brand with tie-ups with retail chains, bookstores and with coffee outlets.” Go said.
