Modi govt to rename three islands of Andaman & Nicobar

New Delhi, Dec 25 (IT): The Modi government at the Centre has decided to rename three islands in Andaman and Nicobar - Ross Island as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island, Neil Island as Shaheed Dweep and Havelock Island as Swaraj Dweep, ANI reported.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is scheduled to visit Port Blair in December 30 to mark the 75th anniversary of Netaji's historic visit to the islands, is likely to make the announcement of name change.

Earlier in November, Netaji's relative and West Bengal BJP vice-president Chandra Kumar Bose had written to PM Modi demanding that Andaman & Nicobar Islands be renamed to 'Shaheed and Swaraj Islands' as a tribute to Netaji.

In his letter, Chandra Bose said that Netaji "as the first Prime Minister of United Free India" had hoisted the national flag at Port Blair on December 30, 1943, thus establishing the Azad Hind government. He said that following this, Netaji had renamed Andaman & Nicobar Islands to Shaheed & Swaraj Islands.

In his letter dated November 11, Bose writes, "By hoisting the National flag, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, as the head of the Azad Hind Government also fulfilled his promise and commitment that INA (Indian National Army) would stand on Indian soil by the end of 1943."

"On December 29, 1943, Netaji accompanied by Sarvashri Anand Mohan Sahay, Captain Rawat-ADC and Col DS Raju, the personal physician of Netaji, landed at the Port Blair aerodrome in Andaman. The enthusiastic Indian residents accorded them a warm reception. Netaji appointed Indian National Army General AD Loganathan as the Governor of the Islands," he writes in his letter to Modi.

To all whoever opposing renaming of the Island.

Where were you when Land of the holders went to some xyz just to win election. I have lost my ancestral land which is many acres. Today the worth of a cent is above ten lakhs and its guidelines value is not less than 3 Lakh. How richer could I have been if the holding was in my name even after partition to all the co brothers or the rest. Congress has done enough damage just to stick to chair. Even today we were not able to reclaim a square feet of land out of the lost one hold. Many Governments have formed but none dared to give back even one tenths of the lost holding. All Politicians are looking for their own survival. If the name change of Land is intolerable, is changing name of the holder without a sale or endowment tolerable?

Islands are getting names of great patriots. Land holders will still continue to enjoy their rights. I welcome the move.

People who claim the renaming is about patriotism are being disingenuous. Renaming the islands on December 25 by the party that calls December 25 "good governance day" is not a coincidence.

If you can't do anything better and substantial, give new name. That would at least sound familiar, if not funny sometimes.

Seems like there is nothing better to do, so, rename. Every political party is using this formula to fool the common man
Bombay was changed to Mumbai, Trivandram to Thiruvananthapuram, Cochin to Kochi, Madras to Chennai, Bangalore to Benguluru, and the list goes on
Can anyone tell me, how has this mattered to the common man, other than creating chaos worldwide to administration and the transportation industry?
Rather than simply changing names, put in some efforts on the sincere development of the place. It will make more sense.

I am sure someone has been paid to prepare an IMF report.

The IMF report is likely to announce: "The PM who has renamed the largest number of islands, in the world".

And all the blind supporters will celebrate saying that their man is the greatest in the world.

BTW, these islands were not going to be India's at the time of independence. They were going to become like Diego Garcia, a naval base of Britain.

But Nehru was absolutely adamant that the islands become part of India. But the Gujju-bhai is interested in real history.

If the English did not capture the islands at that time, they would have been part of the Dutch Indonesia.

Indian rulers of the time never ventured to those islands which are so far away from Indian mainland.

The British were very keen to turn these islands into a British naval base. It was the tenacious fight by Nehru (Congress) that brought the islands to India.
