Turkey issues arrest warrants for 30 coup suspects

Istanbul, Dec 25 (IANS): Turkish prosecutors on Tuesday issued warrants for the arrest of at least 30 suspects, including 24 former military doctors, over their alleged links to a group accused of masterminding a failed coup in 2016.

Anti-terror teams launched simultaneous operations in five provinces across the country to catch the suspects, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

On Monday, in a separate operation in the northwestern province of Bursa, the police detained at least 22 suspects and seized more than $27,000 and some digital materials.

In the Bursa raid, anti-terror teams also took 19 yellow vests similar to those used in anti-government protests in France.

Ankara accuses the US-based Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen and his network of orchestrating the coup bid in July 2016, in which 250 people were killed, and has been pushing for his extradition.

Turkey has been recently tightening operations against suspects linked to the Gulen movement.
