Four Andhra policemen injured in attack by gamblers


Vijayawada, Dec 31 (IANS): Four policemen, including a Circle Inspector, were injured in an attack by gamblers in Andhra Pradesh's Anantapur district on Sunday, police said.

The attackers also set afire a police vehicle. The incident occurred in Tadipatri town when the police personnel had raided a house on a tip-off about gambling.

Circle Inspector Hamid Khan and three constables were clad in civil address when they reached the gambling den. As they entered the house, about 20 gamblers attacked them with sticks and stones even as they the policemen tried to show their identity cards.

The attackers, who also set afire police vehicle, escaped as additional police force rushed to the scene.

The injured police personnel were shifted to Anantapur Government Hospital for treatment.
