Rajya Sabha adjourned for the day amid ruckus

New Delhi, Jan 7 (IANS): The Rajya Sabha was adjourned on Monday for the day amid ruckus by opposition members, soon after it met in the post-lunch sitting.

The Upper House earlier saw repeated adjournments as opposition MPs came near the Chair's podium raising slogans against the government for alleged misuse of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

As the House was reconvened at 2 p.m. after an earlier adjournment, the opposition MPs cutting across party lines were on their feet, shouting slogans against the government.

Within five minutes, Deputy Chairman Harivansh adjourned the House for 15 minutes. As the House met again at 2.20 p.m., the scene was no different.

The Chair then adjourned the House for the day.

Earlier, the House saw disruption as soon as it met for the day.

Minutes later, Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu had to adjourn the House till 2 p.m. amid noisy protests by opposition members.

The Trinamool Congress had given notice under Rule 267 (suspension of business) to discuss "Parliament being bypassed and legislative scrutiny being ignored". The Chair rejected the notice.

The Congress MPs have been demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the Rs 59,000 crore Rafale fighter jet deal.

The Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) members protested against the alleged misuse of central agencies by the government amid reports that the CBI might question former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav in a mining scam.
