Bengal BJP activists clash with police near Mamata's residence

Kolkata, Jan 8 (IANS): A minor scuffle broke out between the BJP activists and the city police personnel near West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's residence on Monday evening at the saffron outfit's rally protesting against the alleged gang-rape of a party activist's wife a few days back.

The rallyists clashed with the police after they were stopped from proceeding towards the Banerjee's residence to hold a demonstration.

The incident caused traffic snarls at the busy Hazra crossing.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s Mahila Morcha (women wing) activists squatted on the road and raised slogans against the state government.

The police arrested a few Mahila Morcha supporters and stopped others from crossing the barricades.

BJP state president Dilip Ghosh along with Mahila Morcha President Locket Chatterjee criticised the state government over police inaction on the alleged gang-rape case.

A 30-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped in an under-construction building near her residence at Khardah area in North 24 Parganas district last week.
