By questioning EVMs, Opposition has started making excuses for their inevitable defeat: Modi

New Delhi, Jan 20 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra on Sunday came down heavily on opposition alliance, saying they have started making excuses for their inevitable defeat in 2019 Lok Sabha polls by questioning EVMs.

The Prime Minister's attack come during his interaction with booth-level BJP workers from Lok Sabah constituencies of Hatkanangale, Kolhapur, Madha, Satara in Maharashtra and South Goa.

"They have now started making excuses for their inevitable defeat (in 2019 Lok Sabha polls). The EVMs are being made the villain," Modi said.

His attack came in the wake of opposition party's renewed demand for scrapping Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and a return to ballot papers.

Twenty-three political parties, including the Congress, came together for the "United India" rally at the Kolkata's historic Brigade Parade Ground on Saturday. Some leaders interacted with the media demanding scrapping of the EVM process.

The parties also decided to form a four-member committee comprising Akhilesh Yadav (SP), Satish Chandra Mishra (BSP), Abhishek Singhvi (Congress) and Arivind Kejriwal (AAP) to deal with the issue.

Hitting out at the opposition parties, Modi said they have no faith in constitutional institutions and this was the reason why they were busy maligning these institutions.

"It is obvious that every political party wants to win elections, but the major concern is that they take people for granted. They think people are fools. This is a dangerous game. Its a matter of concern.

"They do not even think before maligning Constitutional institutions. They do not have faith in any of the institutions. For long, they ruined the country and today they are busy maligning our institutions," he said.

The opposition parties have been accusing the Modi government of ruining the institutions such as the CBI, RBI, CVC and other constitutional bodies.

After the UPA retained power in 2009, it was L.K. Advani who began questioning EVMs, pointing out their discontinuation in Germany and the US.
In fact, Advani even wrote a foreword in psephologist and party spokesperson then G.V.L. Narasimha Rao’s book on EVMs, titled ‘Democracy at Risk! Can we trust our Electronic Voting Machines?’, published in 2010.
In his book, Rao, who was one of the most vocal critics of EVMs, stated that “the distrust among political leaders of all hues in voting machines is so high that most losers are wondering if they had been unfairly defeated in polls. It is about time India shunned paperless voting to make its election outcomes verifiable and auditable.”
"We should revert to ballot papers unless the ECI is able to ensure that EVM is foolproof and every possibility of their malfunctioning is taken care of," Advani told The Sunday Express
In fact, it was on a PIL filed by BJP Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy that the Supreme Court, in October 2013, directed the Election Commission to introduce the VVPAT system in a phased manner. The idea was to implement it fully by 2019.
BJP's long fight against EVM: until it started working in favor. BJP started the EVM-tampering murmurs that haunt it today.
Now that the BJP is comfortably in government, it has no incentive to restart old fights. Its control over a none-secure system, the vulnerabilities of which it knows too well, gives it a competitive advantage.

Modi speaking of EVM's clearly indicates there could be a strategy of BJP evolving EVM's for 2019 elections.

In the recent elections, opposition parties were extra vigilant, trying to give no scope for malpractices. Despite, that there were EVM's gets stored in BJP leaders hotel, with drunk election duty staff, missing for 2 days.

it is important to retain public vigilance in coming days to ensure EVM's truly carry people and public mandate, not the one cooked by corrupt babu's and their corrupt financiers to sabotage true mandate.
