Mangalore: State-level Men and Women Weightlifting Championship begins

Mangalore Jan 8: "Every form of sports and games needs moral and financial support to flourish. Without proper support and encouragement, no sports person can excel at the International level", said Krishna Palemar, Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister.
He was speaking after inaugurating the two-day 40th Karnataka State Senior Men's and 24th Women's Weight Lifting Championship-2009 being organized by the Karnataka Weight Lifters Association(KSWLA), Bangalore and Raymonds Gym, Mangalore in Town hall here on Wednesday January 7.
"In every field, support is a dire need,"' he reiterated, while noting that Mangalore has produced only a small number of sports personalities of international stature.
The function was presided by Ganesh Hosabettu, Mayor, Mangalore city Corporation, who said, " sports and games give us peace of mind". He also promised that he would try to provide financial help to sports and games as supportive measure through the City Corporation after discussing the issue in the council meeting.
Mr World award winner and organizing secretary of the event Raymond D'Souza was felicitated in the function by the KSWLA. 105 contestants are taking part in this championship from statewide gyms and colleges.
Sudhakar, senior manager, Bank of India, Ravi shetty, senior manager, Union Bank of India, and Chandrahas Rai, secretary of KSWLA were present.
Results: 48 kg category: 1. Suchitra Shetty (Alvas Moodbidri), 2. Prema Siddi (Alvas Moodbidri), 3. Sudha Prabhu (KSP).
53 kg: 1. Sharada Siddi (KSP), 2. Rashmi B and 3. Sheetal Maria (both from St Mary College Shirva)
58 kg: 1. Jonabi Devi (SAI), 2. Harshita, and 3. Nirupa (both from Alvas).
63 kg: 1. Lakshmi G (SAI Bangalore), 2. Ashwini (St Mary's College), 3. Namita (Dhavala College).
