Mangalore, Jan 9: The medical condition of Ahmed Hussain, one-year old baby born without eyeballs, has posed a formidable challenge to the doctors in the city.
The parents of the kid, Ibrahim Khaleel and Fathimat-Ul-Zohra, have been taking their kid to the eye specialists in the city and neighboring states since the time the baby was born. Their efforts so far have failed to find a ray of hope for their bubbly baby. The couple is undaunted and continues with their efforts with sheer determination and belief, that their prayers would be answered one day.
Speaking to Daijiworld.com, Khaleel, working in Dubai and a native of Murulya village in Sullia taluk said that the doctors have expressed their helplessness in treating the child, by saying that no treatment is available for such rare cases in India. "We had consulted several ophthalmologists from Tamil Nadu too, but could not extract any hope from them either," the hapless couple confesses.
Ahmed is also suffering from a complication in the palate region and has undergone a corrective surgery recently at the Unity Hospital. According to the doctors, the baby needs one more surgery in the palate region for creating separate links for the mouth and the nose.
Even though the doctors have been expressing their helplessness to do anything about the absence of child's eye-balls, the couple is frantically searching around in the hope that the medical field would come out with a miracle solution for their child. They can not bear the thought of the child having to go through the trauma of life without being able to see.
It may be recalled that four babies were born with similar medical condition in a village in Jharkhand on April 2007. Two of the babies had no eyeballs while the other two had only one eyeball each.
According to Dr Bharati Kashyap from the city, a research article published in Highbeam research website, describes the condition as micro-opthalmic which is caused by environmental pollution or hereditary problems.
