Moodbidri, Jan 24: A baby monkey died in a water drum in Ballalbail, Neerude within Kallamandkur gram panchayat limits.

Ballalbail resident Krishnappa Shettigar who was staying alone in the house had died ten days ago. As nobody stayed in the house after his death, no one noticed the death of baby monkey in the drum.

Villagers who searched the source of stink later found the carcass of the monkey on Wednesday. Kallamandkur gram panchayat development officer Uggappa Moolya, Kallamandkur primary health center medical officer in-charge, Dr Naseeba, veterinary doctor, Dr Mahesh and health center junior health assistant, Mohammed Tanveer Hamad visited the spot.

An inquest was conducted in the presence of forest department officer K C Mathew, taluk health officer Navin Kulal and Kallamandkur gram panchayat ward member Lazarus D’ Costa. As the carcass was decomposed, it was cremated as a precautionary measure.

Health officials have clarified that there is no monkey fever scare in the area. Taluk medical officials have opined that it is an unexpected death as no organisms were found like in the case of monkey fever near the carcass.

Meanwhile deputy commissioner Sasikanth Senthil said that there is no monkey fever in the district.
