Moodbidri, Jan 12: Internationally renowned singer S P Balasubramaniam(SPB) mesmerized the music buffs at the Alvas Virasat here on Sunday January 11 evening, with his beautiful rendering of Kannada, Tulu, Hindi, Telugu and Tamil hit numbers from films including all time hits like Roja Janeman…, Mokeda Singari Untude Vayyari Yaane Moole Kathondu Ulle etc., to the packed audience.
Although the justifiability or appropriateness of presenting filmy music in a stage exclusively meant for national cultural extravaganza is being debated over the last two years, there was no doubt that SPB's performance was sensational and the audience rejoiced every bit of his flawless voice that automatically got itself accustomed to the mood of the songs presented. The picturesque Shobhavana, regardless of what the purists have to say about the cine music, bathed in ecstasy as SPB belted out one song after the other with a flair and smoothness only he himself can produce.
SPB opened the music concert with the song, ' Navu Ondu… Yelle Irali, Navella Ondu,' in praise of Mother India. The opening song appeared to reiterate that Virasat stands for the unity of Indians, irrespective of their caste, creed and religion. The opening was very apt, in so far as it propped up the patriotic feelings among those who witnessed the programme and dawned on them the realization that our strength lies in unity and patriotism.
Balasubramaniam shared his childhood aspirations with the audiences, revealing that he wanted to become an engineer and had no inclination that he would turn out to be a singer later in life. However, after going through so much struggles, tribulations and moments of glory in his career as a playback singer he said, he had accepted music as his obsession and everything that the life offered to him, as the divine play of the Lord.
The other musicians Arun, Madhu, Kishore, Rajesh, Alexander, Srinivas Achar, Nagaraj, Kumar and Umesh contributed to the grandeur of the programme by supporting the main singer with their play back singing.
A dance performance was staged by Archana that evoked thundering applause from the viewers. Alvas Virasat indeed has staged variety music and cultural extravaganza throughout since Wednesday January 7. Balasubramaniam's musical concert was witnessed by a record number of weekend viewers on Sunday evening.
