Mangaluru, Jan 27: Dakshina Kannada district-in-charge minister UT Khader inaugurated the newly built Urwa market at Urwa junction on Sunday, January 27.

The new market cum commercial complex is jointly built by Mangaluru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) and Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC). Having an area of 5,400 sq ft, the building was completed at a cost of Rs 12 crore. Total 122 shops are available in this market.

In his inaugural speech UT Khader said, "Mangaluru stands in second place after Bengaluru in terms of development. The infrastructure of Mangaluru is highly appreciated across the state. A well planned Urwa market was our dream. Former MLA JR Lobo and MUDA chairman Suresh Ballal did initial planning for this market. After the administration of MCC, engineering team and contractors completed the work of new building within a short time. I appreciate all who worked behind this new project. As a part of smart city, various developmental projects will take place across city. By this our city will get good reputation and its benefits will help people.”

In his speech Ivan D Souza, MLC and secretary of Parliamentary Affairs said, "The new Urwa market looks like a five star hotel. I have a request to people to keep the premises clean and also maintain the building. If our markets are clean our kitchens will also remain clean. Markets are very essential in various corners of the city. Government is considering this very seriously and hopes that in upcoming days more markets will come to city. If people support, the work will be done very quickly and smoothly.”

In his presidential speech Vedavyas Kamath, MLA, Mangaluru said, "In our nation people purchase shoes from air conditioned showrooms. However, the essential food items are sold on road side. It is hard reality of our nation. But Urwa market is available for common vendors and they can do business in this market with good facilities. It is my request to citizens of Mangaluru to visit this market and support vendors.”

Deputy commissioner Sasikanth Senthil, mayor Bhaskar Moily, MCC commissioner Mohammed Nazeer, corporator Jayathi were present.

Srikanth Rao, commissioner, Town Planning Board, Mangaluru, welcomed the dignitaries and gathering.

Urwa market credit should go to J R Lobo. It is his hard, honest work this project has completed within a stipulated period of time and why he is not invited. Even if there is a protocol, still he could have been invited. Under his tenure, all most all structural work was completed.

It’s JR Lobo’s work. Just because of protocol Mr Lobo was not invited.
I thought Khader will mention Mr. Lobo’s name but he hasn’t. 90% of the work was completed during Lobo’s tenure. Not only Urwa even Bejai Market has been built by Lobo.

IF you see the building you will definitely not say this. I live in the vicinity of this area
It is not like BJP eating money everywhere and building 1000 crore party office in new delhi.

I think here there is some error as far as area is concerned. If we divide 5,400 sq ft, by 122, then each shop cannot be 44.5 sq feet. Definitely each shop will be more than 150 sq ft or more. Secondly, what about loading are, parking area if any, toilet/wash room area.

This market never had a beef stall and we the residents don't expect one. We respect our Hindu brothern and their beliefs. There's a marigudi temple right across the road and it's a belief not to sell beef here. We the beef eaters have no problem of going elsewhere and buying. Please don't put fire here. We live in solidarity with all communities and let us be the way we are.
