Its very evident from the pictures that the students don't know what they are doing. They seem to be enjoying a day off at College. this is pathetic. Putting the blame on Namratha Madam is rediculous. I have been a student of BBM 98 batch and have known her as the finest lecturer and THE BEST HOD. She has made us all stronger to face challenges in this world.

Juniors its a tough world out there. You will know it once you are out there and regret for what you are doing now. these girls need to know that they are one of the luckiest to be studying at such a reputed institution and sad girls you have put its reputation at stake and the life of a dedicated lecturer with almost 20 years experience at stake. Hope you will realise your mistakes soon and get back Madam. All the best for your future!!

Any suicide will have its own deep reasons. It's sad that a student is no more. But it is pathetic to see the behaviour of the girl protesters. It is easy to put the blame on others. No teacher would be so harsh to give reason to a student to commit suicide.

St. Agnes College is known for the best faculty it has. The students should proud for they got admitted to one of the premier institutions to make their life. Forgetting all this the protesters are having a holiday, with meaningless placards proving how dirty their thinking can be.

No teacher can ever be a demon. The present Students have made all the Alumni stoop low today by their meaningless behaviour. If anybody is wrong there is law to punish them. The dead is already dead. Dont kill the living.

I was a student of Mrs.Namrutha (BBM 2003) She was a strict teacher but at the same time she loved her students and was very friendly with them. Yes, she was firm at  times she had to be and that was for the betterment of the students. She was fine with students who did their work and followed the principles set. What is happening is sad. Girls you are spoiling the name of the college and ultimately your own names. Grow up, do what you people are meant to be doing. Stop blaming the teachers for your improper and immature acts.

Death of an young student is very unfortunate.But please do not equate Suicide with Murder.Life is a gift from God and to protect it is indiviuals duty.Life is full of pressure and uncertainity and we cannot kill ourselves for the failure of life.Let the law do its job and if the teacher has violated the law then let her be punished.My advice to the students is not to fall in to the trap of ABVP, which would stoop to any level to descredit the prestigious institution like St Agnes College.

Regret to see St. Agnes students protesting. These young women are not leaders but followers, with some political agenda. There are so many other serious issues facing the community. Students! please find solutions to the local crises your generation needs to find solutions for yourselves. Protests are not a solution. As a student from one of the first few batches of BBM I have known and worked with Mrs Namrata. She is one of the finest teachers that I have come across who challenges you to bring out the best in you. Yes - she is strict and tells you as it is. To those students who claim to have 'suffered' under her, let me tell you - it is a much much tougher world out there. Whether it is an MBA you do or the corporate world you join, it is only in time that you will appreciate the 'suffering'.

Dear Agnesians, have heard a lot about your college...from the history and the track record the college has maintained,this is not expected out of you...I have studied in a catholic institution myself and for the values I have imbibed from my teachers, I am what I am today..Each one of you need to realise and acknowledge the pain and stress your lecturers go through on a daily basis...and all of this only for you to be independent and to mould yourself to be able to face life..Dont make a fool of yourself...Just think about this...If it was not Ramya, and instead it was Rosy,Mary or Rita and instead of st Agnes it was any "other" college....Would the reaction be of the same intensity??...Please think before you leap....Tomorrow you might be a lecturer/ teacher/a guide yourself...Would you be able to face yourself? While I pen down this I am definitely not supporting anyone/blaming anybody for the incident...But if we are not able to analyse and react...then there's no difference between us and our friend who lost her life ...we are both losers...hope this message makes a difference in all of us...Especially the youth

Why is politcs getting involved into the teaching faternity, with the financial crises a quality education is a must bringing in politics inside and protesting can't serve the purpose, look at the picture majority don't even know the reason they are there protesting, this is like the '80s when we were protesting at fees for backward class etc not knowing the reason throwing stones and shouting at people we never knew.Hope sense prevails, and hope the management does not jump into quick conclusions, till the truth comes out . I am an Ex-Agnesian. I know Namrata maam was very strict, but she was also  encouraged any any student who had talent and creativity. She did go the extra mile for some students whom she liked. Yes, this could be perceived as partiality, but once you are in college you are in preparation for the real world. You are no longer little children who will be cosetted by everyone around you. The sooner you learn this the better. I grieve deeply for the loss of young Ramya's life and my sympathies are with her parents. But I do not think it is fair to accuse a lecturer with over 15 years of experience that her harassment has led to suicide. It is also painful to see the young girls on protest smiling and laughing. There is no grief, no seriousness at all. If I perceive it right, the students have just used the excuse of unfortunate Ramya to get a day off and take out their frustrations against the nuns and college management. Since when has a communal organisation like ABVP had membership among Agnesians? Looks like the Agnesian girls have allowed themselves to be used as pawns in a bigger political game. Use your brains girls and think things through for yourself.

Well, it is truly sad to hear about Ramya's suicide. But, an enquiry has to be initiated before jumping to any conclusions in this matter. I would say -just because a person is strict does not mean that he/she is responsible for someone else having committed suicide. The exact cause and circumstances under which the suicide was committed has to be ascertained for any conclusion to be drawn whatsoever. Definitely, convicting someone without proof is outrageous. I know Mrs. Namratha Suvarna quite well as I'm an ex-agnesian and honestly,believe it or not, I've been in her bad books too,at times.But,no matter what she has done to me or numerous other students, I know that her intention was never to harrass me or anyone else or to show people that she is someone great. She was just trying her best to mould her students so that they could face the corporate world where they would be required to work under extreme competition and face dire situations.She knew it was a RAT RACE out there and she just wanted her students to be well-equipped to face that sort of an environment. Yes, I know very well that she was extremely strict and overbearing even during our times and still continues to be the same. But, If a lecturer is not allowed so much freedom to correct or take any disciplinarian action against her students, It would mean that she is really not bothered about their future. This is coming from a person whom she is supposed to have 'harrassed'. However, If I have to conclude what I want people to understand out here, I would say that Mrs. Namratha Suvarna is a wonderful lecturer and wants the best for her students , keeping long-term goals in mind. Taking action against her is taking things a just little too far especially when it has not been proved that she is guilty. Come On!!! Learn to be fair people!

I could not help reading  the experiences of Nikita and Prema-Mangalore, in response to Mr Felix's comment.  I do agree,that for reasons unexplainable some students unfortunately might have undergone harassment during their educational careers which happens in work places as well. But that doesnt mean protests of this nature, should be staged, which not only affects the image of the college, and the students, but also the sentiments of the past students. Being a ex-commerce lecturer of St Agnes college myself,, for a brief period, I know that the Management and staff of St Agnes is totally dedicated to the welfare of the students. And hope the students will show more maturity, and intelligence, while handling sensitive issues of this nature in the future.

This is not just a protest/ outcome of a single incident. Im sure there are many others who have been at her receiving end for a lot of silly reasons. As an Ex BBM student, i recall that there were other lecturers in the BBM department who were also strict disciplinarians as well and i respect them for that, but they never played the game of favouring some students, insulting students, drawing up false conclusions etc.  I can conclude that this is not a protest of one student, but of many who have also been hurt and i think this strike is justifiied.

It looks like the girls were having a picnic at the cost of someone who may be innocent. Was there a written note by her about the reason of her suicide. St. Agnes College is a reputed college and I too am a past student of the same institution. I am sure there are ways to solve any kind of problem or there are other colleges to continue her studies instead of suicide.

This incident reminds me of the infamous case of the year 2006 of Madhav college, Ujjain in BJP ruled MP where ABVP office bearers beat up and assaulted Prof.Sabharwal who died of lung and rib injuries ,for enforcing discipline during the college elections.Subsequently the Supreme Court had to transfer the case out of MP to Nagpur for free and fair trial of the accused.So much for the track record of ABVP

The day I  started schooling till puc I had never seen the teachers entering the class rooms without a cane in their hand> But we took this positively and moulded ourselves even with these beatings. Never we have protested but this protest of the students should be inside the college campus not troubling and creating a dirty image of themselves. In what way can a teacher harress a student  ? She  was quite grown up to share her problems with her parents or friends. Suicide is not the solution nor is is right to dismiss a teacher. St Agnes college must bear part of the blame for admitting ingrates into the college. The protesters have no pride in their college and have allowed themselves to be used as pawns. I agree with Fr. James and a lot of you. The reason for the sucide has to be determined. It is totally baseless to go after the HOD, just because he/she is strict. Harrassment is a different story and if there is any indication of this by the HOD then of course appropriate action need to be taken. The students protesting are doing their bit. I don't blame them for the way they seem. I would hate it if they were all grim and focussed. Remember they are protesting the ouster of the HOD and not mourning.., further this is indeed a great institution, I am sure the Nuns  will handle the situation  well.

The need of the hour is for the student to think rationaly. They should show maturity in thier actions. I feel they are influenced by persons/groups with vested politicals interest. The photographs clearly show that students involved in the protest do not understand the gravity of the situation. A student has lost her life. The biggest loss is to her parents who brought her up all their life to give her a good future. It is true that St Agnes is a great institution. But many times in India , cases such as these, the person responsible may not even be questioned let alone arrested. For all those protesters I ask you, what would you do in your individual capacity to get justice in case a similar incident would have happened to your most loved one. The problem with some of our colleges in India is that teachers generally abuse their powers by insulting, discriminating and isolating students that they dont like. Students caught in such cases have no other alternative as they cannot even change schools as nobody will take them. All students are not strong enough. Some are vulnerable and  get frustrated and take to drugs, commit suicide etc. In my opinion, the girls have done the right thing by coming out and demonstrating. Atleast one can hope that some kind of investigation will be conducted and in future other students are spared from such misery.

I read daijiworld.com regularly to keep myself d and in touch with my hometown. I also read the comments of the readers which are quite sensible and supportive when need be. Today, i felt I had to write a comment on the above Protest of St. Agnes College students - it is a tragic loss of life at such a young age - when so much could have been done to solve problems in a more mature way! Ramya, must have felt helpless or depressed to a degree beyond hope to end her young life in such a drastic way! What surprises me is the students of St. Agnes College - supposedly the future members of our respectable community show no respect or grief for the deceased!! They are laughing and smiling - most of them - one would think they were quite pleased to have the day off in the name of protest - others look as one reader rightly put it as having a picnic. We do have protests in the West - only very young children behave in an immature manner the others youngsters or protestors of any age are committed to the cause to be serious and decent about it. It is a shame to see the graduating students of - as everyone calls it the reputed college of Mangalore - behave in such an immature and childish manner and smile/enjoy a day off from lectures in the name of a college mates' tragic fate!!

I am surprised to see people are having fun out there in the name of grieving where situation clearly visible that people did not wish to grieve of their own ! Once respect and faithfulness to the institute is tested at a critical time instead of showing allegiance to your institute and its faculty you have embarrassed the institute and embraced ABVP engraving its emblem on your foreheads. What a shame ! Mind it soon some of you also end in the teaching career. Therefore, know its impact now. Instead of demanding removal of faculty ask pardon from the college authority for your irresponsible scandalous behavior. Educational institutes are just like a family and its faculties are like parents and family elders. Do you allow yourselves wash your family dirty linen in public ?. Learn to understand what I mean. And about Namrutha Madam she is very nice teacher and behind this protest there are many other hands which we cant see. Every body will be having personal problems .Who knows about Ramya? What was the exact truth behind her death? and what was the exact reason?

It is very sad Ramya had to end her life like that. A lot of counsel and help is given in St. Agnes hostel to overcome ones mental,physical and spiritual hardships. Very disappointing and surprising, that Ramya could not approach anyone to open herself out! The pictures of students say, that they are having fun at the cost of this very sad event on the pretext of protest against the person who curbs their will to train them as sensible citizens.

One mute point is whether the same organisation l launch such a protest in front of other city colleges ? Once again it appears that this  outfit is implementing their hidden agenda. The management of St.Agnes College which has a reputation of over 100 years should not buckle under any pressure from any quarter while dealing with such a situation.The college should act as per the rules and regulations framed by it and not allow any one to dictate and ignore outfits which pursue communal agenda. If any student is having a grievance they have avenues to bring them to the notice of the Principal and get them redressed.Else they are free to quit and join any other college which are many in number in the city. In the instant case the parents of the student have the right to ascertain the actual cause for their daughter's death to take such an extreme step instead of simply jumping into conclusion and blaming the HOD.However if the HOD is indeed responsible , then certainly the college should initiate suitable action as per the college rules. Just like the Awareness campaign against terrorism launched recently on campuses, this issue also appears to have been politicized and the student community divided for polarization and electoral gains.

Let there be an enquiry, and if HOD is proved guilty, then the college can suspend her. If they do it without enquiry just because the students demand it, HOD can go to the court of law and seek jsutice in the form huge compensation

May Ramya’s soul rest in peace. But students of a Management course (training themselves to become FUTURE MANAGERS ) should think twice that when a manager faces a crisis, he or she … should resort to skillful negotiations and persuations and not muscle flexing. Muscle flexing will be a sure sign of a poor manager whose esteem will become low and in turn will never succeed. If a manager flexes muscles with staff or a business prospect – they will only meet with resentment or even retaliation and loose complete trust of the negotiating partner. I am the proud son of a great Mother, an ex-student of this great College who graduated with a Gold Medal in the entire Madras Presidency (comprising whole of Southern India ) in 1939 and the dignified way she managed to bring three of us up after we lost our father at a very young age clearly reflected her great educational background from the St.Agnes College. Personally as a Professional Manager in my own career in an international company of repute, I humbly request the Management students of the St.Agnes (who are much younger even to my own daughter) to kindly avoid such muscle flexing tactics with the Nuns of the college who after all have sacrificed everything in life and dedicated their entire life, I repeat their entire life to mould you as a better citizen in your own future life.

i was a ex student of the college . and just because of that lady I had to leave the college. she was torturing me to such an extent that i finally had to take a move from there just after my 1st year BBM . so i truly protest against her and even happy to see the students protesting since i dont want one more to be her victim. i am just happy that atleast now girls are raising their voice against namratha. go ahead girls i will always support you all...

I am saddened by Ramya's suicide. To be driven into committing suicide is a seemingly grave and desperate act. But to hold the HOD responsible for her suicide is preposterous!! Needless to say, I am appalled and bewildered by the students' outcry against the HOD and the reputed institution to which these students belong. Being an Alumnus of this great institution (class of 1981), I have great respect for the staff and fraternity of St. Anes College. Staff vary in their approach towards and expectations of their students. Students who do feel discriminated against do have avenues to voice and address concerns. It is not the end of the road! Students, allow the parents of the deceased to grieve in peace. Rather than tarnishing the image of your esteemed institution, allow the administration the time and space to investigate and handle it by the book!! Heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased. What a loss of young life!!

Teachers do not have any personal enemity with the students but they are sometimes bitterly spoken because it is always for their betterment. This does not mean that the students should end up their life like this. St. Agnes College as well Ms. Namratha have seen many summers in that place. It is not fair that the students boil the situation like this. I request the college committee to give justice to Ms. Namratha because she would never do anything bad to her students.

People seem to Enjoy their day out in the sun and having a nice time thanks to ABVP and student leaders who were instumental in this protest. Definitely the case has been reported to Police and police will come with their report and its too early to decide the transfer or dismissal of Head of the Department. If there was a harrasment from the HOD of the concerned department the same should have been reported to Police or authorities at the college. And there should be be independent enquiry on the allegations before any action is taken.

Mr.Felix, I am an  x-student of St.Agnes college and I deeply grief for the suicide action of my junior... It is sad that she has taken such an action.. I was a victim of harrassment myself but I was afraid to reveal it to anybody. I respect my college..But I had  no courage to fight against her as she would take revenge on me. I  speak from experience and not hearsay. You  talk about complaining... which I did... But it was of no use as  other lecturers would just pacify us and ask us to adjust for 3 years. I support the protesters. My  deep condolences to the grieving family and friends. of Ramya.

Sorry to know about Ramya's death. I have known the HOD since the last 4 yrs as I was her student (bbm dept),she has never harassed any one . Yes I do agree that she is strict disciplinarian but she always wanted her students to be the best . Just one question to all  BBMstudents .Did Ramya ever tell any thing before her death to any of her best friends ? She could have had personal problems ,and how can you point fingers at the HOD and blame her for Ramya,s death . This college has been a reputed college for all these years .So just wait for orders from the college education board .

Dear Mr.Felix , you must understand the facts. Let us atleast consider the remote possibility that the HOD is a monster. The students did complain in the past against her attitude towards students and it fell on deaf ears. Now after the death of Ramya, all students have awakened and want to voice out their greivances which they were experiencing all these years. Before the street protest, the students did go through the proper channel but again false assurances were given and NO action was taken against the HOD.Only those parents whose children did their BBM in St.Agnes College will understand what their children went through. My daughter also is doing BBM in St.Agnes. The  tragedy is that none of the students could complain against the HOD for fear of further ill treatment from the HOD. I do agree that St. Agnes is a reputed educational institution and I have my full respect for this college. I did meet many students personally and what I gather from them is that they are deeply hurt and bitter about the way they are treated in the class by this HOD and they want justice to be done this time as one innocent life was lost.

If the agitation is called by the St. Agnes College student Council associaiton then it is a serious matter. As this strike is called by student affiliated to ABVP it seems they have taken dictation from these organization. This clearly shows the polarization of the situation to bring bad name to the institution. If Ramya is meted harassment at the college by the HOD, why Ramya has not shared this thought with other students or her class representative. If not then something wrong with Ramya. Blaming others is easy for the downfall & failure of one self. With due sympathies to the bereaved members of the family the issue should not have politicized.. Now the college may stop hostel facility even for the deserving students which was the safest place of girls in Mangalore studying in St..Agnes college.

These students are not from the KG or primary class to be harassed. If the HOD was a monster as it is displayed by the protesters, why were there no complaints against her, all these days. Did Ramya write any suicide note or confess to any of her class mates that she was harassed by the HOD.

St Agnes college is not a one person show. It is a very reputed and well organised institution. The past students treat this college with great respect. Even if the HOD were to be at fault, the students being well educated, must have had the decency to complain through proper channels instead of trying to tarnish the image of the college.

Very sad to know that Ramya commited suicide. not sure what is the truth but everyone should think atleast 20 times or more before commiting suicide. is it worth? she could have done her best and continued there or changed the college. she could have discussed the issues with parents and friends for solution. Of late in Mangalore students are taking to the streets as if its the first and only choice of voicing their demand. I think GS and other students reps are influenced by local politicians who in turn do such stupid things from students. I really pray that students understand their community rules and shy away from these acts. In Mangalore we have many students from other parts of India. These students will carry these same idelogies to their respective state after their graduation. God save India.
