Mangalore, Jan 15: Students of St Agnes College here, bearing allegiance to Akhila Bharathiya Vidyarthi Parishath (ABVP) staged a protest in front of the college, demanding suspension of the head of the department of business management of the college, alleging that she was responsible for the death of a student of the college who committed suicide in the college hostel recently.
The protesters alleged that Ramya, a student of the college, had committed suicide recently because of the harassment of Namrutha Suvarna, who is the head of the department in BBM section of the college. Ramya was studying in the first year BBM. She had committed suicide at the college hostel by hanging herself.
The protesters also alleged that the college administration is trying to protect the accused and planning to allow her to continue in the same post. The students boycotted classes and came out from their classes in the morning and joined the protesters in front of the college premises.
Sr Prem D’souza, principal of College who invited the protesters to her chamber informed them that the rules and regulations of the college do not permit issuing suspension orders of the staff of the college facing allegations, immediately. "We have to wait for orders from the college education board which takes a minimum time of fifteen days to arrive at a decision," she explained.
The principal also informed the media that the college administration has treated the issue with all the seriousness it deserves and is trying to find out the truth behind the allegations.
But the protesters urged her to take action against the accused within two days, threatening to resume the protest with the support of students from other colleges. Following the assurance of the principal that a decision would be taken at the earliest, the protesters dispersed.
Some sources in the college have expressed the opinion that the issue is being politicised. They felt, that parents of Ramya targetted the HOD concerned, as they were overcome by grief and were unable to think clearly.
Along with ABVP members of the college, leaders from its district committee headed the protest.
