Mangaluru: No Horn Day concept - MLA meets vehicle drivers and owners

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jan 29: On the model of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi's pet project, 'Swachh Bharat' campaign, 'No Horn Wednesday' has been launched in the city, with the active interest taken by the city (south) MLA, D Vedavyasa Kamath.

On Monday January 28, Kamath held meeting with drivers and owners of buses, auto rickshaws and cars and sought their support to making this concept a thundering success.

The meeting was held at Circuit House here. The MLA noted that horns of vehicles mainly contribute to the noise pollution in the city. "To reduce the noise pollution, we have planned 'No Horns Day' every week on Wednesdays. I request all the vehicle drivers to take special interest in making sure that vehicles are driven without blaring any horns. If buses, rickshaws and cars support this concept, we can expect a lot to happen on this front. In course of time, we can free the city of the sound of horns," he explained.

President of City Bus Owners Association, Dilraj Alva, Jayaram Shekhar of Bus Owners Association, Lokesh Shetty of Auto Rickshaw Driver s Association, Arun, Jayaram and office bearers of several organizations pledged support for this proposal. There was also a suggestion to make Hampankatta - Ambedkar Circle stretch into 'No Horn Zone' by planting a board and ensuring its strict implementation.

Kamath said he will soon visit schools, colleges, government offices, temples, mosques, churches, private institutions etc to spread this concept. He said that by avoiding horns, we can improve our health.

Mr. MLA ok no horn on Wednesday, what about building footpaths and have good crossing so that pedestrians can walk safely. All the zebra's have disappeared I mean the zebra crossing. The little footpath which is left for pedestrians is used by vehicle to park two wheeler or at times four wheelers. Near the central market vendors are using the footpath. Will the no horn day work.

    Mr. MLA
For your information, no horn areas are hospital and school areas. And please strive hard to communicate (educate)the drivers to follow no horn in this area. This is swach initiative.
No horn on Wednesday s is stupid political idea. Is this is your own idea or your chaiwala idea..

Wish initiatives were on safe driving, obeying signals, no overtaking on wrong side, giving the right of way etc. No one needs to blare horn on any day if rules are abided by. Also stop people from spitting and littering on roads. We sometimes use horn in desperation to save ourselves from city buses which are about to hit us. Many of them get a bit nervous when we screech especially when overtaking at hairline space on left. Hope we don't see accident Wednesdays after this rule

Over-use of the horn is what should be discouraged and not a "No Horn" policy. The horn is a safety feature in vehicles. And no excessive honking near hospitals or schools.

The shocker in our country is that some bikes and rickshaws have modified horns fitted that sound as if a big truck is approaching !

Dear Readers, Keep politics away. If this suggestion was given by a Common Man, how you would have reacted. Don't you think this Man has taken some initiative as No Horn Day. You just see in Mangalore how badly Bus Drivers Honk. Just give it a thought and comment. Again for this keep politics away.

Instead of no horn day, low decibel horn s should be promoted.
Horn is an important tool while driving in cities like Mangalore. It is the nature of the pedestrians that they will not move fast if you don't horn. The auto rickshaws take turns causing an accident unless the vehicle behind honks.
What will our MLA's driver do if I block his way unintentionally...suppose I have parked with hazard light just to attend a phone call and there is not enough space for his vehicle to move. I would not be warned if flashes his light during day time!!!

Honk is required only to animals not humans. If people are crossing the road then vehicles should allow them.to cross instead of.honking.

    Dear MLA,
No Horn Day will not give you any success or bring you to limelight. Put your efforts in developing the city roads, sewage, crossing, footpath etc.. only then you will be for the people. Do simply create a mess in the city every week with no horn day and be a reason for more accidents. Its more than a year since you are a MLA with zero improvements in the city.

The size of the horn is the attraction. The beauty lies in the size of the horn. I used to see different kinds of a horn from the state bank to Kankanady. Simbly in the name of development why the mla is spoiling my fun. If he wants to do development let him first stop open sewage gutters flowing in Mangalore, which spoiling and the groundwater is spoiled and encouraging breeding of mosquitoes which is a cause of disease.

so in that case foreign countries should have highest accidents as no horns are used there except making animals move off the roads. horns are least needed when the driving is disciplined and careful. only reckless driving needs horns.

Vijay, first see their roads and infrastructure in foreign countries! We spend more money than them but nearly half goes into private pockets!? First provide broad roads, disciplined driving, adequate footpaths and then talk on the fancy subjects of horn!! There is enough and more work if MLA is interested and capable!! Learn from JR Lobo!!

Goa kerala has better driving discipline with average infrastructure and roads. Let's first learn to use properly what is available. Once while crossing the road in kerala vehicles stopped us to cross 15metres away. With 4lane roads here you will find vehicles coming on the wrong side.

Please check how the roads in Western and gulf countries are??
If there are any damage to the road it will be fixed in no time.

In Mangalore /India no one is bothered to fix it untill there is a protest or accident or any ministers are on visit.

It's been 8 years since the project started at pompwell in gulf or Western countries this work would be complicated in a year .. and I have seen ..

Instead of no horn day ,he could have done something for the betterment of roads and give some advice to No1 Mp to finish this off..

Hope this flyover will be fit for travel .

I agree, Cities like managlore is very congested, in order to have safe drive u need to be highly alert, thus horn plays a crucial role.People who compare mangalore with developed countries better undertand the fact that , we dont have such infrastructural facilites and those countries have high standard of traffic rules and policies.

I agree with you - we, as far as Valencia, did not sleep the whole night long. Just think about the sick patients at Fr. Muller's hospital - does any body care? The SC judgement says no fire crackers after 10 pm and who will implement this? Isn't it the duty of Mangalore police? Day time horn nuisance from the buses/trucks and night time fire crackers. I wish well for this MLA who has made a beginning.

It is very difficult to handle our Auto and Bus drivers. Some time back also tried this and failed. It is clearly mentioned at School, Colleges and Hospitals places Horn is banned, but how many are following this. Best think is remove horns from vehicles otherwise no use. Only few days game. Shift the Bus stand to Pump well , almost 70% horn problems will solve. Because of these buses block the road. And vehicles riders forced to horn. Why service buses allowed to fly in heart of the city?
