Moderate intensity earthquake occurs in J&K

Srinagar, Feb 2 (IANS): A moderate intensity earthquake was felt in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, but no report of any casualty or damage was received from anywhere so far.

Sonum Lotus, Director of the MeT Department, said: "A moderate intensity earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale occurred today at 5.34 p.m.

"The epicentre of the earthquake was in Pakistan and the depth was measured at 212 km under the earth," he said.

Temblors have wrought havoc in Kashmir in the past as the Valley is situated in highly earthquake-prone region.

Over 40,000 people were killed in two parts of divided Kashmir when an earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale hit the region on October 8, 2005.

The town of Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-administered Kashmir was razed to the ground by that earthquake.
