Doctors at Hyderabad's NIMS leave forceps in patient's abdomen

Hyderabad, Feb 9 (IANS): In a shocking incident, doctors at Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) here, left artery forceps in a patient's abdomen during a surgery.

This negligence by the doctors at the government-run super-speciality hospital came to light on Saturday when an X-ray revealed that a pair of forceps was embedded in the stomach of Maheshwari Chowdary.

The 33-year-old had undergone a surgery for hernia on November 2 last year. But even after the surgery she complained of severe abdominal pain and an X-ray report revealed that surgeons had accidentally left the surgery tool in her stomach.

The patient's relatives staged a protest outside the hospital and lodged a complaint at the Punjagutta police station.

The woman is now admitted for another surgery to remove the forceps.

NIMS Director K. Manohar termed the incident as "unfortunate".

"We have ordered an inquiry by a three-member team and we will take action after we get the final report," he said.

It is very unfortunate that the patient should be operated twice and suffer pain.Exactly when a operation is over ,before closing the abdomen ,doctor has to ask the assisting nurse if he can close the wound and nurse has to count her swabs, instruments or needles and give her consent if ok is.Suppose something is missing, search in and out so that everything is there.otherwise she shouldnt consent to close, report the matter to chief doctor or sister.,a xray should be taken on spot.so that nothing is left back in abdomen.directly doctor is not responsible.I wonder two artery forceps were missing and later by arranging tray to sterelize didnt notice? However the patient should take a lawyer and file a case to compansate her for a good amount of money from hospital.

No, Please don't call them fake. They have come to those posts by way of reservations and quota, though themselves are not qualified to the post. Imagine if Rahul Gandhi is the doctor who got the post through family quota and India is the patient!!!!

License of the Doctors who are responsible for the surgery should be withdrawn. Quota system is responsible for this
