New Delhi: Petrol, Diesel Prices After All, May Not Nosedive as Expected

Daijiworld Media Network - New Delhi (SP)

New Delhi, Jan 26: There are indications, that the union petroleum ministry might affect a cut of only five rupees per litre of petrol while diesel may go down by a rupee a litre, as against the public expectations for a huge cut.

It is learnt, that the finance ministry wants to fortify its coffers by enhancing the excise and customs duties on oil.  A senior official said that the above cut is expected in view of the enhancement in excise and customs by the central government.

In case of cooking gas, the government has not been able to reach a consensus. Oil companies have been pointing out that they have been suffering a loss about Rs 33 per gas cylinder even after the reduction in oil prices and hence, they are vehemently opposing any reduction in gas prices. The government however, wants to cut gas prices by around Rs 20 a cylinder, it is learnt.
