Japanese stocks rise on weaker yen

Tokyo, Feb 12 (IANS): Tokyo stocks opened higher on Tuesday as the yen's retreat against the US dollar gave exporters a boost, while dip-buying underpinned the broader market.

As of 9:15 am local time (5:45 am IST), the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 208.73 points, or 1.03 percent, from Friday to 20,541.90, Xinhua news agency reported.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 15.67 points, or 1.02 percent, at 1,555.07.

Machinery, warehousing and harbor transportation service, and transportation equipment-linked issues comprised those that gained the most in the opening minutes from the morning bell.

Financial markets here were closed on Monday for a national holiday.
