17 people including child killed in Delhi hotel fire


New Delhi, Feb 12 (DC): At least seventeen people, including a child, were killed after a major fire broke out in Hotel Arpit Palace in central Delhi's Karol Bagh area in the wee hours of Tuesday.

Thirty-five people were rescued and those injured were taken to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.

"At least 30 fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the fire has been doused. Cooling operation in the building is underway," the fire department said.

Most of the deaths took place due to suffocation, the police said.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer Sunil Choudhary told ANI, "Two hotel staff members had jumped from the fourth floor of the hotel in an attempt to save themselves. The status of the staff who jumped is yet to be known."
