Udupi: Guest lecture on ‘History of English Literature’ held at Milagres College

Udupi, Feb 13: Milagres College, Kallianpur, in association with department of English organised a guest lecture on ‘History of English Literature’ for the students of Optional English.

Namitha Tholpadi, retired associate professor, departmnet of English, SMS College, Bramhavar was the chief guest. She gave a brief introduction to English literature and dominant writers and poets of the various ages of the English Literature. While speaking on the topic she said, “Without knowing the background of the writers we cannot understand their writings. In order to understand the beauty of literature we need to know the history. History of English Literature is a vast subject. If we know this, then only we can understand the depth of the literature.”

She focussed on some of the novels prescribed by the Mangalore University in the syllabus of Optional English. She requested the students to develop reading habits and creative skills as literature plays an important role in everybody’s life.

Dr Vincent Alva, principal, Milagres College Kallianpur in his presidential remarks said, “Read the books not for scoring marks in the Examination, but for gaining knowledge. If you understand the depth of Literature it leads you to the imaginary world which may exist or not, but you will get a wonderful experience and a new joy. It will motivate you to read more and more books” And he also said, “Literature makes you richer and richer not financially, but it will provide ample opportunity to understand the reality of life.”

Ashitha of II BA compered the programme. Chandrika, Sandeep Shetty and Sushma Dias from the department of English were present.
