Thousands join Major Bisht's funeral

Dehradun, Feb 18 (IANS): The mortal remains of Major Chitresh Bisht, who was killed in an IED blast near the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir last week, were consigned to flames with full state honours on Monday.

The late Army officer's Major nephew lit the pyre at the Haridwar cremation ground.

Earlier, thousands of people gathered in the funeral procession that began from his Nehru Colony house here in the morning.

The coffin was wrapped in the tricolour.

Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat visited the house and paid tributes to the martyred Major Bisht and laid a wreath on the coffin of the slain son of the soil.

Several senior state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders including Uttarakhand BJP chief Ajay Bhatt and Pradesh Congress Committee President Pritam Singh were also present at the funeral.

Slogans like "Pakistan Murdabad", "Major Bisht Amar Rahe" and "Bharat Mata Ki Jai" rent the air as thousands of people mourned the loss of Major Bisht.

He was killed on Saturday while defusing an IED along the LOC in Rajauri sector of Jammu and Kashmir.
