Pulwama attack: SBI says it will waive off loans taken by slain CRPF personnel

New Delhi, Feb 19 (PTI): State Bank of India (SBI) has said it would waive all outstanding loans taken by 23 CRPF personnel who were killed in the Pulwama terror attack.

The state-owned lender would also expedite payment of insurance amount of Rs 30 lakh each to the families of CRPF personnel killed.

In a release, the bank announced a special initiative for the CRPF jawans who were martyred in a dreadful terrorist attack in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir.

Last week, 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were killed in the attack.

All the CRPF soldiers were customers of the bank under Defence Salary Package where the bank provides insurance of Rs 30 lakh to each of the defence personnel. Bank is taking steps to expedite release of insurance money to the next of kin of the martyred soldiers, SBI said.

"23 soldiers had also availed loans from SBI and the bank has decided to waive off all the outstanding loans with immediate effect," it added.

SBI Chairman Rajnish Kumar said it was extremely distressing and disturbing to witness the loss of lives of the soldiers who always stand for safety of our country. In this moment of grief, our sincere thoughts are with the families of our brave hearts, he said.

The bank has also appealed to all its employees to voluntarily contribute towards the cause through dedicated government portal https://bharatkeveer.gov.in.\.

The illiterates need to be explained that by waiving the loans of martyrs, Bank has closed the loan accounts once for all by adjusting against the profits. In case of all other loans that are written off, the loan accounts are alive internally in the Bank's books and more vigorous recovery action is on through dedicated branches.

And SBI is not fully government owned. Central and State government entities hold 58.51% of the shares and 41.49% is held by public.

All the Savings Bank accounts of defence personnel with SBI have free insurance cover of Rs 30 lacs at Bank's cost and are normally paid within a week of unfortunate event.

    SBI is Government-owned.

No loss to the bank managers.

If these bank managers contributed 10% of their salaries, I would think that would be magnanimous.
I do not clap at the modern-day Robin Hoods.

It's good gesture by SBI. Apart from wavier of loans SBI should pass on all insurance benefits to their legal heirs. 👍👍👍👍✌
