'We look forward to making India a USD 10 trillion economy': PM Modi

New Delhi, Feb 23 (DC): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday laid out his vision for making India a USD 10 trillion economy, and the third-largest in the world, saying he wants the nation to have countless startups, and be a global leader in electric vehicles.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said his five-year tenure had laid a solid economic foundation in the country eradicating the complete policy paralysis that had set in during the last Congress-led UPA regime.

Addressing a business summit organised by a newspaper, PM Modi said, “Total policy paralysis was observed before during the previous Congress-led UPA government. Change is clearly visible today.”

He criticised the runaway inflation, rising Current Account Deficit (CAD) and complete policy paralysis in 2013-14.

BJP-led NDA rule witnessed the highest post-liberalisation growth rate of 7.4 per cent and the lowest inflation of less than 4.5 per cent, PM Modi said.

Reforms like the Goods and Services Tax (GST) have laid a solid foundation for higher Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth, he said.

He added: “We look forward to making India a $10 trillion economy and the world's third-largest economy.”

Whether it is Modi or Congress, they just speak on the brighter side, but behind that brighter side how many problems India has in comparison to other countries, they prefer to keep silent. India is still far away to reach 10 trillion economy in terms of GDP nominal. No doubt, under the GDP PPP we are quite near the 10 trillian. PPP, that is purchasing power parity theory which is critically examined and recent refinements are introduced to it by latter economists, cannot be said to be the correct tool to gauge economy. We say our economy is more than France, yes it is, but, when it is subtracted by population, the nominal GDP that is per capita income, we are very very poor.

Santan, if we can decrease the denominator, then we can better our per capita. Can we expect this from appeasing party?. Anybody producing more than two should be stripped of voting rights. But a party so dependent on vote bank will never do this sir.

Fellow speaks about 10 trillion economy as our Oxford trained International economists speak about miserable decisions that pushed us back. Chaiwalas should not speak what they do not understand.

A global leader in electric vehicles? Possibly a global leader in PURCHASING Chinese-made electric vehicles.

Countless startups? They will unfortunately end up being owned by foreigners. Remember the story of Thums Up?

    Wishful thinking is easy.

But, unfortunately, wishful thinking does not equate to a sustainable economic policy.

Wishful thinking requires no education. A sustainable economic policy requires education of the highest order.
