Delhi LG stresses scientific disposal of waste

New Delhi, Feb 25 (IANS): Delhi Lt. Governor Anil Baijal here on Monday asked agencies for proper collection of construction and demolition waste, its scientific disposal and proper utilisation of the processed products.

Baijal issued directives while chairing a meeting at Raj Niwas. The meeting focussed on dumping of construction and demolition (C&D) waste in drains, which chokes, stagnates and hinders the flow causing severe environmental damages, the LG office said in a statement.

"The LG directed agencies for proper collection of C&D waste, its scientific disposal and proper utilisation of the processed products," it said.

Dr. Bhure Lal, Chairman, Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority (EPCA) informed the LG that during his visit to some 'nallahs', particularly Najafgarh and Shahdara drains, it was observed that conditions were really pathetic and stench unbearable.

He also said entire National Capital Region (NCR) was dotted with C&D and plastic waste mountains. They were responsible for deterioration in air quality as well as underground water quality.

"Major behavioural change campaigns are required for maintenance of drain, disposal of C&D waste and municipal waste by residents along the banks of drains," the LG office said.

"Septage disposal in the drain is a major threat," it added.

The possibility of deployment of flying squads along the banks of these drains were also discussed at the meeting.
