Captured Indian Pilot Abhinandan Varthaman’s family served Indian Air Force for generations

New Delhi, Mar 1: Indian Air Force Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, held captive by Pakistan after his plane crashed on the other side of the border while chasing back an intruding F16 jet, has been released.

Abhinandan Varthaman hails from a family of Air Force veterans. His grandfather, Simhakutty, fought for the nation during the Second World War in the Air Force. His father, S Varthaman, was a leading pilot and served as an Air Marshall with the Indian Air Force. Air Marshall S Varthaman was awarded Param Vishisht Seva Medal for his distinguished service in Air Force. The proud father was all praise for his son’s grit and valiance that is being held captive by Pakistan’s military. He said “I am happy that Abhi is alive and sound in mind and body. The way he answered all their questions shows that he is a true soldier and the whole family is proud of him.”

The father’s military records boast of an equally decorated history. The retired Air Marshal took over as Eastern Air Command’s Officer Commanding-in-Chief in 2011. He was one of the few first-rate pilots who held the merit of having taken 40 types of aircraft to the air, clocking over 4000 flying hours.

He served as the Chief Operations Officer of Gwalior at the time of the Kargil war. He was also the commanding officer of an operational military airport in the western sector during Operation Parakram following the terrorist attack on Parliament on December 13, 2001.

Besides keeping India’s air spaces safe, Abhinandan Varthaman's father was also an advisor for a Tamil film "Kaatru Veliyidai", helmed by Mani Ratnam. Ironically, the movie is based on an Indian Air Force pilot who lands in Pakistan after his aircraft was shot down. The officer was reunited with his family in the film, much the same way the country awaits the safe and early return of his soldier.

The entire country is bursting with emotions ever since the news of capture of Wing Commander got in. From politicians to local people, everyone is expressing solidarity with the family of the pilot in these testing times. Abhinandan’s father prays that his son does not get tortured and returns home safely.
