One more arrested in the murder of bookie Vijay Batra

Gurugram, March 1 (IANS): The Gurugram police arrested a youth who allegedly played a crucial role in the murder of Vijay Batra, the alleged bookie, at Sohna Road on February 22.

Accused Sujeet Gupta alias Bullet, a resident of Devi Lal colony of Gurugram, had reportedly informed shooters of the Kaushal gang about the movement of Batra on February 22. The shooters intercepted Batra's car in a service lane of Sohna Road, in front of Parsvanath residential complex, and shot him from point blank range.

"Gupta was tasked to track the movement of Batra. His interrogation revealed that the ganglord had instructed him to monitor Batra's movements," said Shamsher Singh, ACP crime, Gurugram.

"Gupta tracked Batra for a week before the murder. He passed the information to the shooters about Batra when he got out of his residential complex Park View Apartment. The accused had a foolproof plan for his murder. They chose the place as well as the escape route," Singh said.

The police said Gupta's criminal record spans three years. "When he was 19 years old, he was a street vendor at Khandsa road Anaj Mandi. He had enmity with local resident Aakash Chokkar. The accused allegedly fired several rounds on Chokkar who narrowly escaped despite sustaining three gunshot injuries," said the ACP.

"An FIR had been registered at the Sector 37 police station. Gupta was released on bail 7 months back. When he was in prison, he reportedly came in contact with active members of Kaushal gang. Since then he was working for them," the ACP said.

The accused was arrested from an underpass of NH 8 near Khandsa Anaj Mandi. He was produced before the Gurugram district magistrate who sent him to five-day police remand. The police have already arrested two youths, including a shooter, in the case.
