Save urine to stop urea imports: Nitin Gadkari's suggestion

Nagpur (Maharashtra), Mar 4 (IANS): Offering an out-of-box proposal, Union Minister for Transport Nitin Gadkari has suggested storing human urine to make fertilisers and put an end to imports of urea.

Citing examples of extracting bio-fuels from natural wastes like urine, he said that human urine can yield both ammonium sulphate and nitrogen, addressing a meeting of young innovators at the Mayor Innovation Awards of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation on Sunday.

Though Gadkari said he has suggested for storing the urine at Indian airports, if the urine of the entire country's people (1.20 billion) can be saved, India could stop imports of fertilisers like urea.

However, the outspoken Gadkari -- whose name has been doing rounds in political circles as a potential Prime Minister candidate -- rued that his unique and fantastic ideas never elicited cooperation from the officialdom.

"I don't think even the civic body will help. People in government are trained to be like (myopic) bulls walking the rut, without looking any where," said Gadkari.

In the past, Gadkari claimed to have used his own urine as a natural fertilizer at his official bungalow garden in New Delhi, and cited other instances of how human hair can also be used as fertilizer.

He is right. In olden days urine used to be the manure for many of the farming activities. Villagers used to store it and use it as manure. Don't under estimate his ideas.

If saving it is not enough, you may also import it. Ambani would be more than willing to enter into a deal, if it has not been signed already.

Urea (NH)2CO content of Urine is 9.5 mg /liter, 95% urine is just water.
A back of the envelope calculation shows that, to get 50 kg of urea one needs to collect approximately 5000000 liters of urine! One can very well imagine the volume of urine requirement to stop the millions of tons of urea import of urea.

As per your calculation, a huge amount of water becomes by-product after extracting Urea (NH2-CO-NH2). That water can be used to cultivation purpose. Thank you for supporting Gadkari with your valuable information and calculation.

Then Govt or Municipality impose tax on urine collection.
Like solid waste collection tax added in spite of paying drainage tax.

This guy must be serious, like the late PM Morarji Desai who advocated a similar proposal in the 1950s. I do remember in the old days when there were no latrines, urine collected in the night in what was called "tast" or chamber pot, was thrown around coconut trees (narlanCe maaD) and plantain trees (keLmbo), and it was considered good for the soil and the plants grown on them. Does any one know the "good old days" before the sewage system was established in Mangaluru? I do.

I hail from a small village near Mangaluru . We had a petty farm in which we cultivated beetle leaves which are used to eat as pan. As children eight of us urinated in a earthen pot kept in a corner of the court yard. It was saved to manure the beetle vine . Little cow dung was add in the pot to prevent the smell coming from the pot. Every week my father would carry the urine and manure the beetle vine . One could see a real difference in the yield of the vine which received this manure . Later on artificial urea came in the market and when it was used the life of the vine was short lived. Hats off to Mr. Gadkari floating this idea of using organic manure which available in plenty , only to be implemented using the modern technology .

This is absolutely disgusting from a RSS man in BJP govt. Speak something sensible in front of young innovators. Be graceful and role model in front of children. In fact all BJP and RSS leaders are obsessed with street class language, it is difficult for them part away from it. Thus is BJP level of thinking. There are quite a few in BJP who give this type of ludicrous speech including PM.
