SC says shut non-compliant silica dust-producing plants in Godhra


New Delhi, Mar 5 (IANS): The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to shut down the quartz and other silica dust-producing industries in Godhra, Gujarat, which are not complying with its recommendations on safely norms.

The bench of Justice A.K. Sikri and Justice S. Abdul Nazeer gave directions to shut those industries not complying with CPCB's recommendations in the court hearing on the 2006 PIL the by Peoples Rights and Social Research Centre seeking compensation for their workers suffering from silicosis.

The PIL petitioner NGO had contended that because of the non-compliance of the safety measures, including use of anti-dust masks and glasses to protect eyes, workers were getting exposed to serious lung ailments.

There are 35 such industries located in Godhra.
