India's unemployment highest since 2016, climbs to 7.2% in February: CMIE report

New Delhi, Mar 6 (Reuters): The unemployment rate in India rose to 7.2 percent in February 2019, the highest since September 2016, and up from 5.9 percent in February 2018, according to data compiled by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) that was released on Tuesday.

The unemployment rate has climbed despite a fall in the number of job seekers, Mahesh Vyas, head of the Mumbai-based think-tank said, citing an estimated fall in the labour force participation rate. The number of employed persons in India was estimated at 400 million in February compared with 406 million a year ago, he said.

The CMIE numbers are based on a survey of tens of thousands of households across the country. The figures are regarded by many economists as more credible than the jobless data produced by the government.

The figures will be unwelcome news for Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of the Lok Sabha elections due to be held by early May. Concerns about weak farm prices and low jobs growth are often brought up as election issues by opposition parties.

When the government has released official data for the jobless rate in the past it has tended to be out-of-date. But recently it withheld a batch of data because officials said they needed to check its veracity.

The figures that were withheld in December were leaked to a local newspaper a few weeks ago, and showed that India’s unemployment rate rose to its highest level in at least 45 years in 2017/18.

A CMIE report released in January said nearly 11 million people lost jobs in 2018 after the demonetisation of high value notes in late 2016 and the chaotic launch of a new goods and services tax in 2017, hit millions of small businesses.

The government told Parliament last month that it did not have data on the impact of demonetisation on jobs in small businesses.

This report of India's unemployment highest since 2016, climbs to 7.2% in February is wrong. The job generated from selling tea and pakoda has not taken into consideration. There is also great success in Make in India. Even the tallest statue of Sardar Patel is also make in India. I don't agree with the report.

In India, Christians have the highest rate of unemployment in both rural (4.5 per cent) and urban (5.9 per cent) areas. Speaking to The Hindu, Alakh Sharma, Director of Institute of Human Development, said: “Unemployment level in India is highest among those people who are richer and more educated. The reason is that poor people can’t afford to stay unemployed, and hence, opt for any kind of work, irrespective of the nature of the job. The better off have the capacity to be unemployed as they look for the right job. Christians are the most educated group, hence unemployment rate is higher among them.”
    the report said.

The other reason is Christians don't come under any reservation. If not 100% scorers, their climb up is a herculean task. Yet, the crime rate in them is minimum. I am proud in saying this.

Soon, we will need to add 1% to the figure (of 7.2%)...

... as exports to USA will be reduced by USD 5 Billion (when Trump's rules impact on the export businesses), and some collateral damage kicks in.

Indians need to elect educated (that is, with REAL degrees) persons to run India.

When uneducated actors are elected, what we have is an economic disaster.

No other country has more nonresidents or persons of their countries' origin working out of their countries, like we do. Then, is it necessary to refer to any report ? India does have not only unemployment, but acute unemployment.

If only the unemployment is the issue, then the country is able to take it, because India is heavily depend on agriculture. The big problem here is in these 4 years especially in the last 2 years, every prestigious institutions of India and Prestigious Posts of India lost their credibility. Once upon a time PM post was standing high, because the person representing should had the virtue, today CBI, SBI, IPC, Army or Civil services all are looked as suspicious, the credit goes to current government. Will hope for best or face the worst.
