Kaup, Mar 9: After a car that was driven haphazardly hit a scooty at Shirva on Thursday March 7 evening, a woman was killed. The deceased was Prema Acharya (48) from Mattar in Shirva. Her husband, Ramesh Acharya, sustained serious injuries. 

The accident happened in front of the engineering college at Bantakal. The car which was moving from the direction of Shirva towards Shankarapura hit the scooty at high speed. The couple were smashed against the road in this accident. The couple was rushed to Manipal hospital. But Prema breathed her last at the hospital on Friday. 

The youth who was responsible for the accident fled from the scene. The car, after hitting the scooty, plunged into the roadside drain.  As such, it narrowly avoided hitting the electric pole. 

Shirva police, who have registered a case, have confiscated the car. 

Ramesh Acharya works abroad and had come to his hometown by availing two months holiday. The couple had visited Kunjarugiri Pajaka temple in their son's scooty and were returning after visiting Prema's parental home when the car hit their two-wheeler. Prema is survived by two sons and a daughter.
