Post-demonetisation deposits to be probed if voted to power: Congress

New Delhi, Mar 11 (IANS); Lambasting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for destroying the economy through demonetisation, the Congress on Monday claimed that if voted to power, it will probe the post-note ban deposits in tax havens and Indian banks, including a Gujarat bank with BJP President Amit Shah as its director which had netted a very high amount of money.

The Congress' fresh attack against Modi on demonetisation came following revelations that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had contested the impact of the move, particularly in the context of its stated objective of curbing black money and counterfeit notes.

Citing the minutes of the RBI's central board of directors' meeting held just prior to Modi's November 8, 2016, announcement, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said the government imposed demonetisation on the RBI and termed it a "huge money lacquering scheme".

The minutes of the RBI board meeting attended by the then Governor Urjit Patel were obtained and made public by RTI activist Venkatesh Nayak.

"The fact that the directors were not convinced by the objectives which the government sought to achieve, particularly the impact on black money and counterfeit notes, proves that the demonetisation decision was imposed on the RBI which ultimately devastated the Indian economy," Ramesh told the media here.

He also said that Patel, while appearing before three parliamentary panels, never revealed about the minutes of the RBI board meeting or about their concerns.

According to the minutes, the directors observed: "Most of the black money is held not in the form of cash but in the form of real-sector assets such as gold or real estate and that this move would not have a material impact on those assets."

"Rs 400 crore as a percentage of the total quantum of currency in circulation in the country is not very significant," the minutes further read.

Harping on these two points, Ramesh said that demonetisation not only devastated the economy, destroyed millions of jobs and broke the backbone of the small traders, but it was also a huge money laundering scheme.

"When the Congress comes to power, we will probe all the aspects of demonetisation. From the huge money deposited in a Gujarat cooperative bank of which Amit Shah is a director, to the spate of purchase of properties by the BJP just before and after demonetisation.

"We will also look into how demonetisation was used to launder black money through foreign tax havens. Demonetisation is a scam and the Congress government will investigate all the angles," added former Union Minister Ramesh.

No doubt, demonetisation is a bigging scam, money laundering. It was a big bonanza to some of the ruling party leaders. Otherwise, how on earth people like Jay Shah could earn 4000% profit, within one year, on his investment. This is only a tip of an ice-berg. There are hundreds of cases like this. Good that Congress is promising to unearth the truth if it comes to power.

Congress should campaign tooth and nail on BJPs face; right in Ahmedabad where Mr Shah's bank got the highest deposit. Indira Gandhi would have done that, not sure about her grandson/grand-daughter. they're way too soft-spoken for politics.

If voted to power, the very first act of Congress should be to demonetize the pink 2000 note. It was foolish on part of Modi and BJP to introduce this denomination if they were honest about curbing black money.

The pinks are out of circulation now as BJP has hoarded them for election giveaways. Anyone receiving them now in lieu of votes will face huge problems later on.

Dont let any probe go Modi way.

Modi led BJP was given chance to probe all allegation against congress and Gandhi fly. There is nothing come out in the past 5 long years. Which proves either of two things, quite clearly and without any bias 1. Gandhi fly and congress is clear of any corruption, they were targeted for politics 2. OR, Modi led BJP is incompetent to the core.

Which of the above is true.

As per an RTI reply, within five days of demonetisation, scrapped currency bills worth Rs 3,118.51 crore were deposited in eleven Gujarat district cooperative banks linked to the BJP.

₹14293.71Cr deposited in Co-op banks in BJP+ ruled states!

Similar to something in your comment, Gadkari had said last year (2018). He said that in 2014 his party wasn't sure of coming to power hence no question of fulfilling election promises. Therefore, the party leaders were told to make impossible promises - so they did. The results shocked the party and left them in lurch whenever their promises were reminded to them.

Congress is not a novice like BJP - they have ruled the nation for more than half a century. MMS kept the economy intact despite two recessions in the world. Therefore, don't worry about Congress' win or loss, you worry about making history of BJP coming to power second time at-least once.
