LS Speaker gives up security, protocol vehicles

Bhopal, Mar 16 (IANS): Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Saturday announced that she was giving up her Z-plus security as well as the protocol vehicles that formed part of her cavalcade in her capacity as the Speaker in the Lower House.

In a letter to Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath, Mahajan said although neither her candidature has been announced nor the notification for the Indore Lok Sabha seat has come, she feels in a "peaceful, safe city" like Indore she did not need the security apparatus as well as other government vehicles.

"Although I am still entitled to the security and protocol vehicles -- and they are still accompanying my car -- as I still hold the constitutional position of the Lok Sabha Speaker, I want to inform you (Chief Minister) that I am giving up these facilities," Mahajan said in the letter.
