AAP accuses Amarinder of poll code violation

Chandigarh, Mar 17 (IANS): The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday accused Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh of violating the model code of conduct by announcing sops on the occasion of the second anniversary of his Congress government in the state.

Sangrur MP and AAP state chief Bhagwant Mann said in a statement the Chief Minister was repeating his tactics of luring voters with fake promises ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

He said Singh has promised loan waiver for Punjab farmers besides taking up the Lokpal Bill, the Conflict of Interest Bill and a bill to secure the properties of the non-resident Indians (NRIs).

Mann said the poll code of conduct was in force when Singh made the promises on Saturday (March 16) to mark the second anniversary of his government. The AAP would file a complaint with the Election Commission (EC), he added.

The AAP leader also said the Congress government had failed to fulfil any of the promises made to voters before the February 2017 Assembly elections. Mann demanded the EC to declare the election manifesto a legal document.

"Political parties must be made bound to fulfil promises written in the manifesto after attaining power. Failing to do so, the EC must have the power to cancel the affiliation of that party and bar that politician from contesting elections," Mann said.

Voting for 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab will be held on May 19.
