India, Pakistan trade heavy fire on LoC

Jammu, March 22 (IANS): Indian and Pakistani soldiers exchanged heavy gunfire on Friday on the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district, the Defence Ministry said.

"At 3.45 p.m. the Pakistan Army violated the ceasefire and resorted to unprovoked shelling and firing at Indian positions in Mendhar sector," Ministry spokesman Lt Col Devender Anand said.

The Pakistanis used mortar shells and small arms to target Indian positions. The Indian Army retaliated "befittingly", he added.

On Thursday, an Indian soldier, Rifleman Yash Paul, was killed in Pakistani firing on the LoC in Rajouri district.
