1,290 nominations for LS polls, Assembly by-polls in TN


Chennai, Mar 26 (IANS): Curtains came down on Tuesday for filing of nominations for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls and the by-elections for 18 assembly seats in Tamil Nadu.

Over 1,290 candidates have filed their poll papers with the Election Commission till Tuesday for the Lok Sabha and assembly by-elections in Tamil Nadu slated for April 18.

While the final count of nominations for Lok Sabha will be known later, as per the latest count by the Election Commission, around 930 candidates - 815 male, 112 female and two of the third gender - have filed their papers.

Filing of nominations ended at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

The scrutiny of the papers filed by the candidates will be done on Wednesday and the last date for withdrawal of nominations is March 29.

With most of the candidates of major political parties having already filed their papers, Tuesday saw candidates of AMMK and MNM filing their papers for the Lok Sabha polls.

In the case of by-elections for 18 assembly seats, over 360 nominations have been filed with the poll body.
