UEFA opens investigation against Montenegro

Madrid/London, Mar 27 (IANS): UEFA has announced that it has charged Montenegro for racist behavior during its match against England in a recent Euro 2020 qualifiers match.

England thrashed host Montenegro 5-1 in the match held at Podgorica City Stadium on Monday in the Adriatic nation's capital but the game was marred by allegations of racist chants from the home crowd directed at some of the English players, especially defender Danny Rose, reports Efe news.

"Disciplinary proceedings have been opened following the European Qualifiers group A match between Montenegro and England (1-5), played on March 25 in Montenegro," the European football governing body published on its website late on Tuesday.

The incident occurred in the second-half stoppage time, when Rose, his teammate Jordan Henderson and Montenegro's Aleksandar Boljevic were shown a yellow card each, after a brawl.

Seconds later, Montenegro's fans shouted racist epitaphs at Rose, an action that was widely condemned afterward.
