11 dead as heavy rain, flood hit Afghanistan

Maymana (Afghanistan), Mar 30 (IANS): At least 11 people have died and nine others injured due to downpour and flash floods in Afghanistan's Faryab, Jawzjan and Sari Pul provinces over the past two days, officials said on Saturday.

Talking to reporters, Jawed Bidar, spokesman for the Faryab provincial government, said eight people had lost their lives in parts of the province, including Maymana and nine others injured.

Thousands of acres of the farmlands were washed away and hundreds of families were left homeless as their homes were destroyed by floods, the official was cited as saying by Xinhua news agency.

Similarly, floods killed three people in Sari Pul and the neighbouring Jawzjan provinces over the past two days, officials said, adding that thousands of acres of lands and hundreds of gardens in these two provinces were also destroyed.
