Vijay Mallya Saves Day for India - Buys Gandhi's Items for $1.8m

PTI

New York, Mar 6: Mahatma Gandhi's five personal items, including the iconic round eye glasses, finally went under the hammer and were bought by Indian liquor baron Vijay Mallya for USD 1.8 million after hours of high drama.

But the sale would take two weeks to finalise as the owner of Gandhi's prized memorabilia, James Otis had announced outside the Antiquorum Auctioneers auction house that he has decided not to sell the items in the light of controversy.

"The items would be kept with the Auctioneer for two weeks to resolve any claims," a spokesperson for Antiquorum Auctioneers said.

This means, Mallya will have to wait for next two weeks to get the possession of items of the Father of the Nation. The liqour baron is then expected to return the items to the Government of India.

Tony Bedi, who bidded on behalf of Mallya said that he was "bidding for the country" and this sale means that Gandhi's items would now return to India.

Apart from trademark spectacles, which once Gandhi has said gave him "the vision to free India," a pair of his worn sandals, his Zenith pocket watch, made in about 1910, a bowl and plate went under the hammer.

A large number of Indian-American, who were present in the auction room, burst into cheers and clapping when the bid closed saying that the items will now go back to India.

It is said that Mallya and Indian-American hotelier Sant Singh Chatwal had come to an understanding, before the bidding, that they would not bid against each other and were in contact with each other over the telephone while the bid was on.

The last time, when the sword of Tipu Sultan went under the hammer at a London auction house four years ago, Mallya coughed up Rs four crore to bring it back to India.

Earlier, speaking to reporters here, Otis said: "In the last few hours, I have decided, in the light of the controversy, not to sell Gandhi's personal items."

Otis' move came after intense negotiations between him and Indian diplomats at the Indian Consulate in New York.

Otis earlier in the day set new conditions including that India shift priorities from military spending to health care especially for the poor if he has to call off the auction.

In 2007, India managed to obtain another piece of Gandhi memorabilia ― a manuscript of an article he wrote ― after persuading the auctioneers to withdraw the document from sale.

Dear Desert Fox and others, time was too short for the Governments to pass a bill or verdict on the issue, however, notice could have been issued by the concerned Govt. to put the auction on hold. Surprisingly it never happened! Mallya did it before (with the Tipu Sultan), now he did it again (with Ghandi). Congratulations to Mallya.

What Mr.Vijay Mallya did is indeed commendable but why was the Indian Govt.sleeping on this issue having 377 bn $ in foreign exchange reserves???NOW,most importantly does anyone realise how Mr.Otis laid his hands on this collection?Yes,he bought it off one by one from Gandhiji's very own descendants!!!!While we moan, why the Govt/other Indian business tycoon/wealthy people did not do their part does anyone question why these things were sold off in the first place???

Dear Mr. Mallya, we are proud of you. You are a really Indian. We salute for your patriotism. As expected by all of us, you did the great thing once again. Bravo and keep it up. There are so many richest people in our country, with the recent survey, world’s most richest person is in India. Mr. Mukesh Ambani. He can spend money to build world’s most costliest house, but he never thinks to utilize a small portion of his income to such great things.

He is from Gujarat and Gandhiji hailed from Gujarat. What a shame to you Mr. Ambani? I agree with Mr. Desert Fox’s comments. You are right Mr. Charles D’Mello and Mr. Promod Poojary. There are some friends criticized Mr. Mallya’s business money to buy Bapuji’s valuable things. They should know that the same Mallya brought Tippu’s sword back to India. That time no comments came for his business income. Any how You are a great Indian Mr. Mallya. Hats off to you.

It's not the first time that Dr Mallya is doing this. We all should thank Dr. Mallya for his generosity and patriotism. He may be a liquor baron, but he is a shrewd businessman and a true patriot. Govt. imposed custom duty on Tippu’s sword when he was getting it to the country and even after providing a brilliant airline ,giving India a start at grand prix, putting India in forefront on so many things internationally, all he gets from his country men a tag of "beerwala" for God sake he only makes it you guys drink it !.

Like some one was mentioning here about Ambani's, Tata's , Birla's, rich NRI’s, Film stars, cricketers Etc..etc.. They don't seem to be too much worried on spending in these things and will go all out for IPL, etc. They are busy in making money from the money. Ivl make sure to drink only ‘Kingfisher Strong’ henceforth and fly by ‘Kingfisher airlines’ only. BRAVO Dr Mallya, you have done us Kannadigas proud once again.

It is a commendable act of Mr. Mallya for buying those priceless possession of our Bapu and bringing them back to India where they belong to. However, I don't think Gandhiji would have ever liked buying his possessions by a liquor baron. He would have advised Mr. Mallya to spend those millions on downtrodden and less privileged people of India.

The Irony is that the belongings of Mahatma Gandhi were bought by Dr. Vijay Mallya, the liquor baron while Gandhi was against liquor. His patriotism is commendable, while the  central government’s action is condemnable.

I think Mr.Mallya did it again...iam very proud of such Indians who actually have sense and sensibilities to realise the sentiments and value attached to such things, I remember few years back when he bought the sword of Tipu Sultan when it was auctioned and brought it to India again...we need to learn such kind of an affiliation with our country...Instead of pointing at a person and his lavish style...highlight these best things he is doing for our country...I hope that one day he will bring Kohinoor for us as well...all wishes:)

It is totally shocking, the developments to know that the Govt Of India has lied to the Nation. The Govt of India had stated that they have used the services of Mallya to bid for Gandhi's personal belongings. But according to Mallya, he did it on his own, without being asked by the Indian Govt. I wish he will not donate these items to the Govt.
