Mangalore, Mar 6:
“Students must not depend on others but should have their own innovative ideas to succeed in life”, said Padmashree Dr B R Shetty, CEO, Specialty  Hospitals, UAE. He was speaking at the 129th college day of St Aloysius College (SAC) held here on Friday March 6.

Dr Shetty was the guest of honour at the college day celebrations. He said that the students of St Aloysius, while studying in the college, should also learn about the history of the college and how it was built.

Dr Shetty added that such study will make the life of students better by bringing to mind innovative ideas and teaching one to not be self-interested but to sacrifice for society.

“The institution’s efforts over the past decades are praiseworthy and the college has done a great job by introducing new courses. But we need support from all our alumni and well-wishers”, said Leo D’Souza, rector in-charge, who presided over the function.

Dr Shetty distributed prizes to student achievers in various activities and academics. Fr Sweebert D’Silva, principal of the college, read the annual report.  Vice-principals Fr Denzil Lobo and Ronald Pinto and registrar Prof A M Narahari were also present.

Prof Ivan Pinto, convener, welcomed the gathering and student union president Ashith Pereira gave the vote of thanks. A cultural and entertainment programme by students was also held.

Dear Jeo For your information B.R shetty (guest) was not at all the past student of St Aloysius College.... I know him very well where he studied many years ago. We should appreciate his achievement and give credit to those institutions where he studied...Isn’t? Why media or public announce wrong information..... You better tell the truth and get respect.....

I Wonder, how may great peronalities nursed, nurtured and blossomed by this famous St. Aloysius institution. Looking back the old memory lanes, I still ponder, the phenominal growth of this institution within a span of few years. I still recall good old days. I joined St. Aloysius High School in the year 1969, a Old building adjacent to church, boys numbering may be 500.

I remember the dedicated teachers, great mathematician Saldhana sir, Monteiro sir, Acchu master, great artisit, drawing master, Pedru (his pet name), Extra curricular crafts master, D'cunha sir. The pillars of language gurus, Kannada, Sanskrith and Hindi, Krishna Bhat, Thanthri, Aithala,Vishnu Bhat and Mr. D'Leema.

Also, the name cannot be erased from subconscious mind, Pandu sir, the science teacher, famous for his jovial jokes and teaching techniques. I can hear the sound of High School band ringing still in my ears, captained by Jesuit Brother ( forgot his name), and Br. Germeik, who used to produce music through the green leaves. I finished my B.Com. in the year 1976. I am grateful to Rev. Fr. Rasquina, the former principal, although little tough on maintaining discipline, but kind at heart. He believed in his strength and took the reins and performed his duties to the fullest.

I pay my tribute to few lecturers, who are in abode, Mr. Chandrahasa, Mr. D'Mello, great and kind souls. A few names I would like to mention, Mr. Shety, Mr. Upadaya, Mr. Bosco, Sports in charge, D'souza sir. If I am not mistaken, so as others students, Mr. B.S. Raman, will be remembered for his good deeds. He has helped poor students in the form of payment of fees. I had gone to his house, just a week prior to my B.Com. final year examination, asking for few tips. A great teacher, brilliant for his teaching capabilities, extremely kind and obliging.I may have forgotten others, whose names I do not recollect, due to slack memory bank. I am proud to mention here that, my son also graduated with distinction with flying colors and he is an Aloysian, although he chose a different faculty - Science. He is pursuing his E&C sixth semester.

I take this opportunity to wish and congratulate who have contributed their share towards this institution. May the good Lord shower his choicest blessing upon the Jesuit priests who have shed thier dedicated time for the Glory of this institution. May this institution produce good samaritans and good leaders for this nation.

I am proud to be an ex-aloysian. I did my schooling from 5th standard to 12th standard in St. Aloysius institutions. The education I received at Aloysius not only helped to shape up my carrier but also taught me to be a worthy citizen. Hats off to you the Jesuit priests who have managed this institution in such an excellent manner. There may be 101 educational institutions that have come after St. Aloysius but Aloysius is Aloysius. Nobody can beat or reach the standard of all round development that is provided in this educational institution.

In a hundred years, how many able priests, administrators, diplomats, politicians, judges, advocates, doctors, engineers, scientists, industrialists, manufacturers, businessmen, civil servants, men of the Defence Services, teachers, writers, journalists, artists and social workers has not the College given to the country? Therefore what the College has meant to the country in general is not irrelevant to a consideration of what the College has come to be. But, in relation to the second element of the title of the present history, what is more important is what the College has meant to Dakshina Kannada (South Kanara) in particular.

The greatest glory of Mangalore, let us say it humbly and thankfully." This was what Fr. A. Ambruzzi s.j. the tenth Rector of St Aloysius College, Mangalore, said of it fifty-two years ago and now, in the centenary year of the College, the writer of the present history has no hesitation at all in saying it again “.... the greatest glory of Mangalore, let us say it humbly thankfully." In the course of a hundred years, St Aloysius College has travelled (as it were) very far. In 1880, it was only an Upper Secondary School meant to prepare students for the Matriculation Examination. Functioning in a single building, it counted on the opening (January 12, 1880) a hundred and fifty students on its rolls and just two teachers (Fr. Jos Willy s.j. and Scholastic Postlewhite s.j.) on its staff. It grew to be a Second Grade College in the third year. In the mean time, in the fifth year, it had come to have a Middle School (or Lower Secondary) Section added on to its Upper Secondary Department. In the twenty-eighth year, it came to have a Primary Section tagged on to its Middle School Department. Now, in the centenary year, the world of St Aloysius College includes in its grand sweep a First Grade Day College, a First Grade Evening College, a High School, an Evening High School, a Higher Primary School (or Middle School) and a College of Business Administration. Having nineteen buildings of its own (including among others the Centenary Commemoration Building the College Students' Recreation Centre, the old Academy Hall, the College Auditorium, two workshops, the buildings served as Staff Quarters for a good number of the College teachers, three blocks of the former "Down College" providing residential accommodation for quite a few Middle School teachers and other employees, the three hostels and the former Boarding House where the vocationalised courses are currently held) the College now counts 4,591 students on the rolls of the several institutions in its fold (as against the original number of 150 students) and 148 teachers (as against the original number of two teachers)!

The seed that was planted 129 years ago on The Edyah Hill has grown into a mighty tree and it is good to see old alumni returning to the portals of their Alma Mater to pay homage to The Institution which has been responsible for their all round accomplishments. B.R. Shetty who is one of the past students is seen as The chief Guest together with Father Leo and others. Father Leo has been a mentor to many. Here is B.R. Shetty the well known philanthropist who has been greatly responsible for the expansion of Mangalore Airport. He has opened the gates for several fellow Aloysians to come to Mangalore and perhaps help them visit SAC and see for themselves the phenomenal growth. Father Swebert is doing a great job under difficult circumstances. Father Denzil has made many visits to U.S.A. to enlist the cooperation of  several old boys to fund the ongoing projects the estimated cost of which exceeds 60 crores. Who can finance these projects except we the products of OUR COMMON ALMA MATER?. I am sure B.R. Shetty will act as an ambassador and enlist the support of people from the Middle East to come forward and help the institution which has carved them from the raw stones we were. Joe Gonsalves
