Udupi: Scary highway - pedestrians continue to lose lives

Udupi, Apr 2: Speeding vehicles have continued to claim the lives of pedestrians at an alarming rate since national highway 66 was widened. This shows that the drivers of vehicles have scant respect for the lives of pedestrians.

Two pedestrians died in two separate accidents which happened on Sunday and Monday. One of these accidents happened at Ambalpady Junction on national highway 66, and the other one at Kondankoor.

Narayan (60) was waiting near Madhava Mangala community hall near Ambalpady Junction at 7.45 pm on Sunday when a car that was moving towards Karavali Junction from the direction of Ambalpady knocked him down. Narayan, who suffered serious injuries in the accident, passed away at a hospital at Manipal. Relating to this accident a case stands filed in traffic police station against car driver, Abhinantha.

Bhaskar (65) from Kodankoor was killed. On Monday, he was waiting to cross the national highway at Kodankoor near Nittoor here when he was hit by a car.

During the last some months, there has been an alarming increase in the deaths of pedestrians, most of which were waiting to cross the road. On March 4, a woman pedestrian was killed at Kadiyali after an auto rickshaw hit her. On March 6, a tempo had killed a pedestrian near Ambalpady Junction. On March 8, an unidentified vehicle had killed a pedestrian at Hanumantha Nagar. On March 16, a woman was killed at Manipal after an auto rickshaw hit her hard.

    I have been driving for few years now in India as well as gulf. The cops in there aren't strict. No rules are followed. I would prefer firstly the roads to be very well planned for the vehicles as well as for the people who has to cross the roads.
    When you merge from service road to NH there merging also isn't proper no proper signals and the reflectors are useless it cant be seen at night nor there is proper street lights on the highways when you come from M'lore to Udupi only toll is collected.
    The cops should be more strict and hefty fine should be imposed on the violators. People driving on the wrong side just to save fuel. When they start imposing hefty fines against the violators than everything will be fine.
    There should be proper over-bridges or underpasses for the pedestrian.
    The main places where the accidents cause are Brahamavar, Uppor, Santhekatte, Ambagilu, Nittoor, Karavali, Ambalpady, Udyavar, Katpadi and the list goes on if I continue.
    Proper planning is must, the roads they constructed are just for the namesake without proper planning just becozz people shouldn't go on strike thats the only reasons.
    Can you even imagine any Traffic Signals on NH, LOL seriously traffic signals on NH. i was shocked to see.

    Our police department also doesn't fine the stupids who use High beam unnecessarily.Even in the gulf or western counteirs you cant use high beam unnecessarly.
    High beam causes temporary blindness which results in accidents too.

    recently a car travelling in Amabalpady junction took a sharp turn and almost hit the divider in order to save a two wheeler who was crossing the highway. Junctions like Katapady, Belaipade and Ambalpady are dangerous and needs traffic signals immediately.
    Barricade erected through out the highways as well as interior roads are also posing danger. It is placed in two or three layers in some places. it appears in some places that it is erected to not kept to slow down the speed of the vehicle but for advertisement of nearby commercial places like hotels. Instead of such barricade, please install speed bumps (not more than 25mm high) in three or four in parallel with proper reflector and signboards where it is necessary.

    toll is collected .....nobody questions Gadkari?MOdi?Navyuga?Most Importantly why Shobakka not doing any bandh or strike for highway repair?she is MP ?Current?Raghupati Bhat what is he doing?

    The local peoples first say that they don't want underpass they try to stop the work and as a result the underpass gets cancelled due to some vested interest of public
    This is the reality the NHAI has got excellent planning but the public cooperation is zero .

    NHAI's responsibilty seems to end after they build a laatpoot highway. Pedestrians have to fend for themselves. They have converted existing city roads to highway and left the locals high and dry. Why cant the government think of pedestrian safety while building killer roads that divide cities into fragments.

    Better indicate speed limit for all vehicles within city limit. Apply heavy fine..if not obliged. Make price of petrol and diesel high as only person who needed vehicle will travel. Other's can use other sevices which are available. If more vehicles on road...competition will high..to reach fast.
